Missing the tapiini.exe file and telephon.ini file

Question

Hi, My name is Georgia.  I have a Dell Inspiron 1100.  I normally run on a cable internet connection, but recently attempted to use a dial up connection on vacation.  Much to my surprise, my modem would not work and when Dell attempted to help me, they looked for the telephon.ini file and when it was missing, looked for the tapiini.exe.  It too is missing.   I reinstalled Windows XP in hope that any missing file would be found, but it wasn't.   Any ideas from all you computer wizards out there?   I greatly appreciate your help.   Thank you! I know that telephon.ini and tapiini.exe is used on Win 95/98/Me computers but I dont think that its used on XP thats why you cant find it. What error message are you getting when trying to dial up?

Thank you for your reply.  Sorry I'm so late getting back to you.   I believe the error message is #633 which is with regard to the modem not communicating.  But my modem is fine.  Dell checked the hardware with me through tech support over the phone.    Then they switched me to software and said that I was missing the telephon.ini file and we were going to get it back, but without the tapiini.exe file... they couldn't.     Any thoughts??? Did something on the computer actually show an error about telephon.ini or is a Dell technician telling you that it needs to be replaced? The tech might be looking at some troubleshooting material which only applies to Win 9x. This article shows how to rebuild telephon.ini but it only applies to Win 95, 98, and ME -- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=120221

In your case you need to go to Phone and Modem option in the control panel, click on the modem tab and remove your modem. Reboot the computer and let windows reinstall it. If it doesnt reinstall it on its own then find your driver cd.

You also need to check your running processes and programs to make sure that you dont have anything running in the background which maybe trying to use the modem at the same time you are trying to dial up. The first place to check is Start > Programs > Start Up ... a more advanced method is to do it via msconfig (start up tab)

I think the tech was just working off a sheet like you wrote. The error was with regard to communicating with the modem... not the specific files. I will check out the information you just sent me. Thank you so much for your assistance! I really appreciate it!
