N5010 wireless randomly disconnecting and failing

Hello. I've had a N5010 laptop from a few years without many problems, using Win7 60b. Just a few days ago the wireless connection started failing saying there is no network available and that "there was a problem", what I had to do is right click the icon on the task bar, select the troubleshooting option that windows offers to fix it automatically, and after a minute or so the wireless is activated and working again, but just for a while since it lasts about 3~20 minutes and the problem starts again.

Other devices (like phones or other laptops) don't have this problem, so it's not a router issue.

I've tried updating windows, re-installing the official drivers, rebooting the system, etc. I've also discovered that ethernet connection is just not working, as if it weren't there. There is no device shown on the windows device manager for ethernet.

Please, I need to fix my wireless connection.

Hi Arbosis,

I would advise you to use the link below to install the Ethernet driver for your system.

Also, I would like you to check the stability of wireless connection in the “Safe mode with networking” and send us the screenshot of the device manager with ‘Network adapters’ section expanded.

And it seems that in safe mode the connection is more stable. What can I do now ?

Hi Arbosis,

I would like you to check if the ‘Integrated NIC’ is enabled in BIOS by following the steps below.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the BIOS screen pops up.
  3. Using the right arrow key move to ‘Advanced’ tab.
  4. Using the down arrow key move down to ‘Integrated NIC’ and press ‘Enter’ button.
  5. Enable Integrated NIC’.

In addition, I’d suggest that you to change the Advanced card properties of the wireless card. Please follow the steps mentioned below.

  1. Open ‘Device Manager’ by clicking the Start button  . In the search box, type ‘Device Manager’, and then, in the list of results, click ‘Device Manager’.
  2. When the device manager pops up, in the list please check for ‘Network adapter’.
  3. Please click on the arrow mark beside ‘Network adapter’.
  4. You will find the wireless network card available on your computer.
  5. Right click on Wireless card and select ‘Properties’.
  6. Next click on ‘Advanced tab’.
  7. Change Roaming Aggressiveness to maximum.
  8. Change the wireless channels in the ‘advanced card properties’ to 11 or 6 and Disable Bluetooth Collaboration.

Please let me know if this helps.

It keeps failing after all that.

I'm not sure, but it seems that the more I use the connection, the sooner is likely to fail. If I try to download something or start a skype video call it fails more often than while I'm doing offline work.

Hi Arbosis,

I would advise you to disable the firewall and check you if you are able to go online.

Hi Arbosis,

Please perform the following steps to check if your system is receiving an IP address from the ISP.

  1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  2. In the results area, click open cmd.exe.
  3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

         ipconfig /all

        4.  Please check for the IP address under ‘Ethernet adapter Local area connection’.
        5.  If the IP address is starting with 169.XXX.XX.XX. I would advise long power cycle. Please follow the steps for long power cycle.

    • Switch off the computer, Router and Modem.
    • Turn on the Modem after 1 minute.
    • Turn on the Router after 1 minute.
    • Turn on the computer after 1 minute.
    • In addition, In Command prompt screen (black screen)
    • Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

           Netsh Winsock Reset
