take a look at this site:

apologies I don't know of a wired version of this site:

but it does walk you through the basics.  I'd also take a look at netgear's site:

assuming you have something like this:

first thing you need to check is if you can talk to the router via the pc.  to do this hit the start button in windows and click run.  in the text box type cmd and hit enter.  you should get a black pop up dos window type ping 192.168.1.1 and post the results back here.  also type ipconfig /all and post the results.

Thanks,

I assumed the router you mentioned you'd like to connect with the ethernet port in your post was a wired one.

So the question is: will I be able to configure my router using the network connection on the back of my machine to created an access point  or will I need to purchace more hardware ?

Plese send a link to the product you're referring to as your router. Will depend on the type of access point you already own.

Examples:
Netgear: This one lets you connect 4 pcs via cable and 255 via wireless.
Linksys: This one only lets you connect one via cable.

Most common big brands are linksys, netgear, and d-link.

That should be all you need from a WAP standpoint.  You can connect up to 4 pc's/laptops via wire to this.

So to understanmd your problem.
1. You can connect via wireless on your laptop
2. You can connect via wire on your desktop
3. You can't connect via wire and your laptop - this is why you've posted on the forum?

I'm not sure where usb comes into play.  Are you connecting via usb on your desktop and wireless on your laptop from this device today?

When my broadband was connected to my pc i could not get an tcp connection with the netwrok card using an ethernet cable.  They had to use the USB port to connect to my PC .....  Now I have the router which I want to setup an access point to the internet. So will it work to connect my broadband modem to the router then to the network card and setup the router from there. Or will I need somekind of adapter to use the same USB connection that I have now ?
