Slow and intermittent ethernet connection to internet

I have a Dell Dimension9150 with an Intel Pro/1000PL network adapter connected to a Safecom SWAMRU 54108 ADSL LAN and Wireless router.

The cable connection to the router from my PC is intermittent with a message "A Network Cable is unplugged" occurring briefly at regular intervals and the internet connection is desperately slow. I've change the ethernet cable and tried a different Modem but no improvement. My USB ADSL modem works fine so there is no internet problem. It seems like a software problem but I've tried reinstalling the network adapter and the router with no improvement.

Can anybody help?

You've replaced the cable, the next step is see there is a problem with the jacks that the cable plugs into.  Have you checked the link lights on the devices on both ends of the cable to see if they remain lit when the "cable unplugged" message is appearing?

Hi Volcano11,

I've checked the computer end and the light goes out briefly in line with the message appearing. Cannot see lights on the other end.

Although this is puzzling, the main problem seems to be the Ethernet link between the computer and the router. Although the modem on the router shows a fast connection eg 3104Kb/sec when I do a speed test from the computer it comes up with about 70 Kb/sec.

You need to determine if it is the port on the router that is causing the problem or the port or adapter on the computer.   Does another computer work OK if you plug it into the same router port?  If you don't have another computer to try, you could also plug the computer directly into the modem and see if the problem moves with the computer.

Hi Steve,

I plugged the modem directly into the LAN port on my PC and got a fast connection. It does seem as if there is a problem between the PC and the router.

Have you tried a different port on the router?

Hi Steve, sorry for the delay. Yes I have tried different ports but no change. The last few times the connection seems more stable without the intermittent disconnection but it is still slow.

Thanks

Larry
