What router brands to use with my cable modem when using the USB cable to connect to the cable modem

Hi,
I have a Dell Dimension 8250 and for some reason the network connector is not working, so what i did is use the USB cable provided by me cable company to connect from the cable modem to a usb port on my computer. I can get to the internet but I can no longer use my Linksys wireless router ports which uses nothing but the standard RJ-45 connectors.  Is there a way that I can still use my wireless router with this usb connector or do I have to buy another wireless router that has a USB access port so that I can get to the internet.

Thanks

Your best bet would be to install a PCI ethernet adapter in the 8250 and disable the onboard adapter in the BIOS setup.  I have heard that USB routers exist, but I have never been able to find one to recommend and I have heard that they are alot more expensive than the normal ethernet routers on the market today.

Thanks volcano11 and NemesisDB.  I kinda of assumed as much about the USB routers. I will disable the adapter.  If you don't mind me asking what is the steps to disable once I get into BIOS.  Also Is it customary to go into BIOS to disable adapters that are built into the motherboard?

Thanks again

On your system, I could find no option to disable the integrated network device in the published BIOS setup options:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8250/syssetup.htm#1084976

On most systems it would be under Integrated Devices.  Perhaps a newer version of the BIOS has this option, so you might want to look at those options and see if it is possible on your machine.

Yes, it is common to disable a device if there is no need for it or if it doesn't work.  A new PCI network adapter should work just fine whether or not the onboard adapter is enabled or disabled in the BIOS.

Steve,

The option to disable the Network Controller is found under the Integrated Devices (Legacy Select Options). I turned the option to off for the Network Controller.  When I inserted my pci ethernet adapter into one of my slots connected everything up I noticed that the indicator lights on the adapter don't work. I test the ethernet wire and it works fine. I also check to see if there were any problems with the adapter in Device Manager and it told me that everything was working properly. I'm beginning to think there maybe a problem with the ethernet port on the cable modem itself, but not sure. I will go and purchase a newer adapter card that is up to date( although the one I have is only two years old) and just verify that it isn't the card. I'll also check which pci adapter cards have been certified to work with XP, cause this maybe an issue as well.

Thanks
