incoming phone calls freeze computer
I'm trying to help a friend who has this problem. Every time she is working on the computer, typing a document or whatever, when the phone rings her computer freezes up and she has to reboot. Can't even use "shut down", just hit the power button. This computer used to be in a network in a small company who sold their equipment.
Dell Optiplex GX110. Modem: ESS ES568-PI Data Fax Modem. (on COM 3)
Intel Pent 111. 256MB RAM
Can anyone give me a clue?
Thanks
Pam

Remove the modem.
Done. No more freezing on incoming calls.
There is nothing inherent that would cause this other than virus/spyware.

Thankyou for your help.
The computer has been thoroughly checked for viruses.
If I remove this modem, then I assume I will have to install a new one in order to go online, correct?
In that case can you tell me what kind of modem will go in this particular model?
I can't find anything on the computer with the model specifications or information how to upgrade etc.
Thanks again
Pam

"The computer has been thoroughly checked for viruses." You have no Idea how many times I have heard this excuse. Since I have people that work for me that tell me that they have checked for such things without testing for anything I now tell them that if they tell me this and its not correct and I use tools and find a virus they are Fired. Usually its just plain lazyness that has them tell me they cannot fix the problem and they checked everything including virus scan and spyware check etc. Spyware, Worms, Viruses etc is not a simple matter.
If you can still get online I would try
http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Then check for Cool WWW with CWScredder and run Hijack This and post the Log in the Hijack this area of the forum.

New modems are cheap from Geeks. Removing the Junk and or Spyware etc may solve the issue though.
