latitude D810 wireless card question
I recently purchased a used Latitude D810 notebook for my wife to replace her older C640. The D810 has the Vista Business O/S installed and I had a problem trying to connect wirelessly to the internet. I researched the problem on the Dell website and learned that the IntelPRO card cannot be enabled if running Vista. My question is as follows: is there a wireless card (adapter) that will solve this problem and how do I remove the old and install the new? I'm a PC newbie as I've only worked on Apple computers until now. Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't know where you found this info but the intel pro software will run on vista. Perhaps you are reading that you cannot run the intel software if windows if managing the adapter. You can only have on service managing the adapter either the windows wireless zero service or the intel proset service. You should be able to swith back and forth between the two as necessary.
To run the intell look in all programs for the listing for the intel proset and run it. IT should as you if windows is managaing the servcie if you want intel to manage the adapter. if not using the menu bar you will find an option to enable the intel proset. I believe it is under tools on the menu bar.

try going to Start>All programs. Look in that for a listing might be under an Intel heading or might say Intel Proset.

Thanks for the suggestions but, I can't find the intel proset in any programs. I can only find the wireless adapter which is an intel(R) Pro/wireless 2200 BG network connector and it says it is working properly. As I am a newbie with PC's I need all the help I can get.
Thanks.

It should be Programs > Intel > Intel ProSet. If it isn't showing up then I'd recommend getting the latest driver from the Dell support site (or the Intel site) as it should include the ProSet software as part of the driver installation.

I did do that and looked at all the programs as well as within the programs but there is nothing that reads Intel or Intel proset. Don't know where else to look. Thanks.

If you go here and download the #3 listing that is the latest version of the Intel proset management utility

Thanks for the help. The application has been downloaded and installed and shows up in Programs. I ran a diagnostic for IntelPro and now it indicates that the hardware radio is off? What next?

There should be an option to enable the radio, either in the ProSet software or by right clicking the ProSet (wireless) icon in the system tray (down by the clock), and selecting "Enable Radio".

I have looked in the places you suggested and can find no "Enable Radio" selection. This is what I have done and found: right clicking the ProSet (wireless) icon in the control panel a dialog box opened with the following options, Open or Create shortcut. There was no ProSet icon in the system tray only an icon that says "not connected". Within the Device manager I double clicked on network Adapters and then right clicked on the Intel Pro adapter. A dialog box opened with the following choices: Update Driver software, Disable, Uninstall, Scan for hardware changes, and properties. Everywhere I look it says the device is working properly (the adapter), but no information regarding the radio.

If right clicking the icon in the system tray (down by the clock and looks like a fan with a red X on it since the radio is disable currently) doesn't work, you'll have to use the option in the Intel ProSet software utility itself. I don't have an intel card on this machine, so I can't verify it myself but the documentation I have says it should be a toggle on the main window to enable or disable the radio. The

When you open the Intel ProSet utility (might be labeled Intel Pro/Wireless) you should have an "Enable Radio" button on the lower left corner of hte main page. You mentioned in a previous post that you installed the Intel ProSet software so it shoudl be listed in the start menu now.

Thanks for all your help. I can't find the Intel Proset software utility so I'm thinking that maybe I should just buy a different wireless adapter. How difficult is it to install and what do you recommend?

If you can go to the Intel Website, you can download Ver 12 ( I believe) of the Intel Proset software (it covers the 2200 card). Install that and you should be good to go.

I've tried everything, downloaded both V.3 and V.12 of the Intel Proset software with no success in finding any "radio on" toggle. So, I acquired a Wireless Cardbus Adapter (Airlink 101). Installed it and now I have a wireless connection. But, still don't understand why the internal adapter wouldn't work. Thanks for all the help. Either I'm doing something wrong or possibly the adapter is bad even though it is supposedly enabled.

That is entirely possible that the card is bad even though it appears to be good.
At least you are up and running now.
