"Ethernet" doesn't have valid IP configuration

I just had to get rid of Windows 8, so I loaded Windows Server 2012 R2 on my box (I use it to host VM's anyway....). Now I cannot get connected to my home network. it just says "Ethernet" doesn't have valid IP configuration. I have replaced the Ethernet cable (the light blinks), rebooted the box, reset the modem and router, etc. The IP is coming up 169.... so I'm thinking a problem with the NIC. Any help out there? Windows 8 had it's (major) problems, but connecting to the home network via wireless or cable wasn't one of them.... thanks! clint

Clint,

A 169.254 IP Address is a communications problem with the router(s)

Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect.

What happens?
