Hi,

You might want to try updating through an alternate method. You can plug a usb stick into it and update from that, or use http through the web gui or SCP. Page 364 http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_networking/powerconnect-8100_Concept%20Guide2_en-us.pdf

You can also try deleting the backup image from flash to make sure there is enough free space. delete backup-image

Backup image would not delete.  Got to thinking this may well be like the same issues we've seen with our other Dell switching - after being up a long time some things don't work right.  I reloaded the switch last night and sure enough was able to push the new code to the switch.  Had another issue after that - about half the populated interfaces/GBICs in the switch would not come online after the 6.1.2.4 bootcode update.  We had to power cycle the switch this morning to get those 5 interfaces to come back up.  That's unacceptable, but you're still cheaper than Cisco so we'll deal with it.  FYI - all the GBICs used are Dell parts.  I had two 10G interfaces to two closets in the same building, identical programming, identical stacks of N2048s in both closets and one link was up, the other dead.  Switch acted like there was no GBIC in the slot at all.  After power cycle, all are up.

Hello!

Glad to hear all interfaces came up.  Since you are upgrading to a major firmware release (from 5.x.x.x to 6.x.x.x) if you haven't already done it, you will also need to upgrade the Bootcode and CPLD code.  The commands and process are listed in the "Upgrading Dell Networking 8100 Series Switches From Version 5.x.x.x  or 6.x.x.x to 6.1.2.4 Firmware.pdf" document that came in the zip file with the firmware.  Without these updates, individual ports or the entire switch could become inoperable.  Sounds as though you may have already run these since everything is now working.
