I need help getting in a Dell PowerConnect 3324 switch using Hyperterminal

I'm trying to get into the switch using Hyperterminal and I connect and get the Hostname up and type login.

then I add the username = admin and it says % Unrecognized command.

Can someone please explain how I can get in to the switch, I'm not sure of the IP and I don't wat to blow out the config... I actually want to back it up first then reset it....
