I'm going to return it to Dell. Looks like it's a design problem. I can't imagine how a switch could slow down internet access so much!

Did you notice any of the LEDs on the PC2608? My initial thought is a speed/duplex issue.

Is the workstation using a gigabit NIC? What is its driver version?
Is the SMC a gigabit interface?

The cable could also be an issue, are you using Cat5e or 6?

One of the workstations has an Intel gigabit NIC, another two has 100 bit NIC. They all experience the same problem going through my SMC router. The router is 100 bits. Since the link between PC-2608 and 2608-SMC are all 100 bits and we still have the problem, there must be something wrong.

I returned and bought a SMC8508T. It's working fine with the same configuration. Maybe SMC routers only work with SMC switch, or there's sth wrong with Dell switch.

Can someone clarify exactly what the 2608 is doing for me.  We were going to network 5 machines to peer to peer and cable modem.  The Dell rep. stated we needed a Dell 2608 switch not a router.  Exactly what does this switch do?  Thanks

The 2608 is simply an 8-port gigabit switch. If you are wanting to share your cable modem access with multiple computers, you would need a cable/DSL router to perform Network Address Translation (NAT).

Most cable/DSL routers have a built-in 10/100 switch. You could still use the 2608 in conjunction with the router to provide gigabit connectivity to your local computers rather than the 100mb connectivity the router would provide. However, the 2608 will not speed up your internet connection in any way.

Any resolution to this internet slowdown?

Out of curiosity, how would I configure my Truemobile 2350 Broadband Wireless Router to the Powerconnect 2608?

Thx.
