PowerConnect 2724, 2 Existing VLAN's Cannot Ping

I really need your help on a 2724 switch.

At my new job there is an existing PowerConnect 2724 and it is currently in Managed Mode running 2 VLAN. I

Do not have the IP Settings or passwords.

I have set my TCPIP Settings to 192.168.2.2 and my MASK to 255.255.255.0

I plug my laptop's 10\100 card into port 11 on the switch.

I am using both FireFox and IE, Both have their Caches Cleared.

I cannot ping 192.168.2.1 on the switch or open the Embedded Web Server.

The prior IT Manager has split town.

How can I get access to this switch? Any ideas?

If reset the switch will I loose all of my VLAN settings? (And likely my new job?)

Thanks for any help,

Destitute in Switchland.

can you plug into the back of the switch with a db9 cable?  Most of the time this port isn't password protected.  Once connected, you should be able to type "show run" and find out the address of the switch.  If you are unsure, post the config and we can help.

It's likely the old IT Manager set the IP to something besides 192.168.2.1, otherwise you would at least receive a ping reply. With any luck it's still on your 192.168.2.x subnet, and you may be able to use some sort of ping sweep utility to find those IPs on your network. You may also want to check your DHCP server to see if it's getting an IP through that(or has one reserved).

Of course, chances are if the IP has been changed, the default password has been changed as well. The only way to recover that is to reset the switch back to defaults.

It is not your fault that the previous manager left and didn't leave any information. If you absolutely need to have access to the switch and change it back, my advice would be to schedule some downtime to restart and reconfigure(and let the powers that be know before you do this!)

ICE:

The switch is mounted in a large Dell 4 Post rack, and as you already know the switch has a short depth.

I was going to get it from the back of the rack, but I have limited space back there and it is a long ways to the actual back of the switch.

I ran my hand gently across the back side of the switch and could only "feel" a power plug, a fan in the middle area and just case screws.

So I cannot find the DB9, or in this case maybe it does not have one?

Steve:

Maybe you are right, but you know I hate to give up.

So you think I should try to hit 192.168.2.X Where X is 1 to 255?

It would be so much easier to try to crack this thing rather than redesign it, right?

As I am not sure how to setup 2 VLANS without any existing setting for this network how could I go about finding all this out?

The network diagram I have written shows that the 2 VLANS have the addresses 10.0.1.X and 10.0.2.X

and as well I have 2 Non-V which are 10.0.0.X and a 10.0.1.X. These are both for just the servers and two special clients. This is all according to me going around and touching the machines and gathering what I can from the IT staff.

The only realy good news is that all the other switches are default, I just have this one to handle.

Any further help is greatly appreciated.

Well, if your IP addresses are on both 10.0.0.x networks and 10.0.1.x networks, it's likely it may have been assigned something in one of those ranges. Unless you have another network in the 192.168.2.x subnet, I couldn't see a reason why it would be there...

To me, setting it up would probably take less time, and that's how I would do it. (of course, this is what I do for a living!)

Once you're in the web interface, setting up multiple VLANs is pretty easy. All you need to do is go into the VLAN Interface page. The PVID is what determines the VLAN on that port. Now, for the uplink(which presumably goes into a router) that would have be set on the VLAN membership page to accept untagged frames on both VLANs. The router config shouldn't have to change at all.

The manual can be found here:

FYI, there is no DB9 connector for this switch. Just a web interface.
