PowerConnect 6024 - console issues

I have a 6024 that is not responding to ping requests. It had been up until yesterday when this problem started.

I have a PC that is connected to the 6024 via a console cable and I can normally get in that way if need be but I can't even connect via the console cable.

I tried using Tera Term Pro, Reflection and HyperTerminal with the following settings:

Bits per second: 115200
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: Hardware

Once connected I get nothing on the screen. Hitting the Enter key results in nothing most of the time and occasionally I get the following output (1 character per Enter key hit):

íûíííííÿíííÿûííííííííííÿíííííííïíííííííÿíííííí

Now I know it's not the serial cable, I've used it before and it was working fine up until yesterday. The switch does not respond to ping requests so I'm assuming part of my configuration has been either changed or corrupted. I have acls on the switch so no one is getting to it that shouldn't be.

The odd thing is this happended to me before. I even brought my laptop along and connected to the 6024 with a new serial cable and had the same results. I ended up swapping out the 6024 with another 6024 I had and the replacement worked perfectly (that is up until yesterday).

When I brought the switch back to the office and powered it up on my desk the console session worked fine and my configuration was untouched (there was nothing wrong with it).

The switch does not respond to SNMP requests as well as the ping requests. It does however pass traffic and respond to arp requests.

Any suggestions before I have to take a road trip with another switch?

I'm assuming you checked the obvious - verifying the correct baud rate on your serial connection - given that you are seeing some junk on the screen.

So your switch would be functional and you have access to serial interface and telnet and you can ping normally, then at some point the switch stop responding to ping and telnet and you get weird problem accessing serial interface - does that describes the problem you are experiencing?

What version of FW are you running on this switch?  How long did the switch run normally before you experience the problem - from when you last replace it until now?  Also would you happen to know how long it was before you notice a failure the first time you saw it?

Cuong.

The switch is at a remote location with a computer connected to it. I took a ride out there the other day and the cable was disconnected.

Once I connected the cable all was good.

There was something fishy going on though. The part of the config containing the pvids was missing. I had no access-list on the switch so maybe someone hacked into it but I've put an access-list on it now.

I have a used 6024 switch. I cannot get any output VIA the serial connection what so ever. I have replaced the internal serial port and cable and still get no output what so ever. I am not finding much as far as service manuals that list items such as jumper configurations and internal part numbers or troubleshooting steps. About the only thing I can find is "call dell technical support.

No it is not my external cabkle, and it is not my concole settings, 15200,8,n,1. I use the came terminal emulator, cable and configuration on other 6024 switches and it works fine.

Lights on front are green for pwr1 and 2, fan1 and 2.

if I connect ethernet cabling to any of the 24 ports they will light up.

Can anyone offer any guidance on this?

System board number etched is 2976206603-rev1

system board number stickered to the board is 5508003477 rev.2

Since the COM controller is built into the board I can only assume there is a system board issue but without the ability to find any information using those numbers it is difficult to find a replacement board. no FRU numbers on board which makes sense because Dell just sends out replacement switches as opposed to field servicing them.
