PowerConnect 6248 "Operational code CRC is invalid."

Hi,

I got a very weird problem with a PowerConnect 6248. After having tried to upgrade the firmware to the latest version (1.0.2.6), I keep getting CRC error messages and it refuses to load the operational code.

Boot Menu Version:  13 Oct 2006
active image failed crc check. activating backup image
No Backup Image available.
Failed to activate Backup Image.
Operational code CRC is invalid.

I tried the Flash diagnostics, to erase the flash memory, and try to transfer the firmware (XMODEM from Windows Hyperterminal) from the boot menu, the transfer goes fine, but it can't boot after a reset. I even tried the previous firmware version (1.0.0.27), but get the same insane result:

[Boot Menu] 4
Ready to receive the file with XMODEM/CRC....
Ready to RECEIVE File xcode.bin in binary mode
Send several Control-X characters to cancel before transfer startsCKCKCKCKCK
XMODEM transfer complete, checking CRC....
Verified operational code CRC.

Does anybody have an idea?

The initial firmware has been made with TFTP, the CRC check right after the download went fine, but the CRC check failed just after reload.

And now, I cannot run the active image, nor the backup image, both CRC checks fail. But... if I try to run the password recovery procedure (option 12 int eh boot menu), it actually loads up (from where??) a 1.0.0.27 firmware and start. But each time I reload it, I get the same CRC error message.

How did you do the inital firmware update?  TFTP or Xmodem?  Did you use "Downloading the Software.pdf" from the zip file?

Yes, from the boot menu.

Also, in the boot menu, choose option 7 to update the Boot Code.

Well, looks like you're calling into support to get a replacement then.

I got the same CRC error when I upgraded our stack of 4 switches. Since we expected this to be somewhat enterprise-level switch hardware, we replaced our Cisco 4006 and now simply stating replacing the switches are necessary and to call support. We can't afford to have downtime, so the switches are functioning without new bootcode. What's the impact running new firmware without new bootcode?

Does that mean all 4 switches in our stack are now borked?

The flash may be corrupted on your switch.  This is what worked for us.

- Use option 6 from the boot menu to "Run Flash Diagnostics"  (reformats flash)
- Use option 4 from the boot menu to "Load new operational code XMODEM"
- switch should boot into new operational code
- do a "update bootcode" from the operational code CLI

The latest Dell code has a fix for flash corruption.

I had the switch replaced, and upgraded the new one with the new firmware, without a hitch.

If I have a stack of four switches, do I need to replace all four? Or only the Master?

have you tried breaking the stack and updating one at a time?

We had some 62xx switches that had different behaviour but with the same root cause, flash corruption.  To be safe, I would update all the switches as standalone switches with the following sequence:

- Use option 6 from the boot menu to "Run Flash Diagnostics"  (reformats flash)
- Use option 4 from the boot menu to "Load new operational code XMODEM"
- switch should boot into new operational code
- do a "update bootcode" from the operational code CLI

You will lose your config file, so save it off first.

I have this same problem, but the option 6 says "reserved". How do I get passed that?
