The 5548 and MAC Based VLANs... help needed please
Hello everyone,
I have tried to find the answer online and in the manual, but I cannot see to figure out how to create MAC Based VLANs on the Powerconnect 5448.
I may just be having a bad day and complely missing the information... but all I see in the manual is that DVA cannot be used with MAC Based VLANs.
Could someone lend me a hand and help me get this accomplished? I need to have ports that will detect the device based upon the MAC address and put it on an untagged VLAN of my choosing. I'll need 2 MAC Based VLANs minimum, and I would love to use masks to define the MAC criteria if possible.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

On the 55xx switch there is no place for the switch to have a table to associate the MAC addresses to a VLAN. All of that information has to be configured on a RADIUS server. If you went to the trouble of setting up port-based authentication MAC only it still queries the RADIUS server.
It does not look like there is an easy answer.

The wording in the manual is a little confusing on the statement. It must be referencing a feature that was available on earlier models where you could statically map a MAC to a VLAN.
It looks like you will need to set up a RADIUS server for port authentication in order to enable a PC to be assigned to a VLAN based on the MAC address.
If you keep reading in the User Guide support.dell.com/.../en_ug.zip on page 360 is discusses the option to set up Port-Based Authentication Interface Settings.
Hope this helps,
Keep us updated if you can.

Willy, thank you for the reply.
I think you are right, in older switches there was a clear MAC Based VLAN setting.
I see some settings under the dot1x authentication that allows me to setup a port for dot1x, dot1x and mac, or mac only. It references DVA (Dynamic VLAN Assignment) however the requirements to set up a MAC only are not clearly outlined (to me at least).
The manuyal says that the MAC only setting can be used without a RADIUS server because the switch will act as the supplicant... any idea how that exactly works? If so, could you give me any pointers as I am not familiar with the dot1x features of this particular switch?
Basically I have a handful of Zero clients that I want to assign to a VLAN as well as assigning the VoIP Phones to their own VLAN. I have the Voice VLAN feature working, but that requires that I reprogram all the phones in the office with a VLAN (something I am trying to avoid).
Thanks again for your reply, now I can stop chasing ghosts :-)
