Message "CPSCommonTools.dll is missing"
Hi everyone...
My Dell E510 desktop is supposed to be able to burn DVDs and came installed with Roxio Creator. I never needed to use DVD burner, but now my 14 yr old wants to. When we try to run Roxio, it gives the message, "CPSCommonTools.dll is missing". Can anyone tell me why this .dll is missing and how to get it back. I am not knowledgeable in fixing computer problems such as this... I'm a mom who can only handle the easy ones! Thanks for any help anyone can provide. -- millcul

Who knows why the file is missing. However, it looks like you need the Roxio program as it needs to be reinstalled to fix it. I have an E510 and you should have received a (blue label) Dell Resource CD. Load/Install this and see if it contains the Roxio program. If not, you are probably out of luck with the Dell supplied Roxio. The only option would be to use the Dell PC Recovery partiton (CTRL/F11 at boot up) on the hard drive, which will restore the PC to it's original factory software condition, but this would delete any user data or user installed programs on the PC.
What DVD's do you want to make? If it's copying commercial DVD's (which are copyrighted) you can't do that, so that's out. If it's legal movies that have been downloaded, you normally can't make DVD's of those. I mention these since your "14 year old" wants to make DVD's. If it's something from Limewire or a similar P2P program, prepare yourself for possible viruses, worms, spyware, etc on your PC. I won't get into the downloads from P2P sites as this forum's terms of service prohibit discussing illegal copying.
You should have the Windows Movie Maker (if not loaded it is a free download from Microsoft) and it will allow you to create and make movie DVD's. If these are home videos that you (your children) are loading on the PC to make DVD's, although it does not fix your Roxio problem, it should work.

Thanks for your response. I do have the Dell Resource CD. I'll do as you suggest. I definitely don't want to take the computer all the way back to factory new.
Not trying to copy commercial DVD's. My son is making home videos of he and his friends doing stunts with their bikes, go-cart, etc. He likes to add special effects like flames shooting out of an engine, explosions, stuff flying in the air, etc. Don't know how he does this, he's pretty talented. We bought the new Roxio creator 2009, but when we load the disc, the computer doesn't recognize it and tells us to insert a disc. I found out that this is because of the missing .dll file. Thanks for the tip on Windows Movie Maker -- we'll get that too. Making movies out of his camcorder videos is really all he wants to do, and hopefully your advice will get him going!
