RackHD and OpenStack

We did an internal proof of concept some time ago, and just finished refreshing it with RackHD now that RackHD is open source - called “Shovel”. It provides a driver interface from Ironic to utilize RackHD as the mechanism to prep and work bare metal hardware, and a horizon plugin interface to expose the additional API functionality that RackHD provides to an OpenStack installation.

We made a demonstration video on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LluHht5ixTI, and the code for the project is available at https://github.com/openstack/shovel. Included in the README’s are instructions for how to set up a demonstration environment and show these technologies all integrated.

Andre Keedy (who also works on RackHD) is the maintainer of the project, and has proposed it as an unofficial project within OpenStack to set it up for later acceptance as an incubation project, and to work more closely with the Ironic team. The project is in the process of merging over, with an unofficial openstack project, and will be active when https://review.openstack.org/#/c/271776/ merges.
