7040 power adapter the same as for 3020?
I had an OptiPlex 3020 that I upgraded the PSU so I could use a better GPU, and to do so was using a 24 to 8-pin adapter into the motherboard. After a year of success the 3020 has died and I've bought a used 7040 to replace it. It looks like I should be able to use the same adapter on the 7040 as I did on the 3020...? Anybody know for sure?

Should be fine and notice this page which shows the adapter is compatible with thee 3020 and the 7040. I assume you have that same adapter.

Thanks for the quick response. I don't have that exact one, the one I have (from Asicminer) lists the 3020, 7020 and 9020 only, but the info on this one from LeFix corroborates the idea that it should work.

Thanks, good to know. The year I had with it working on the 3020 means I'm at least confident in the one I got (I have read several reviews of these where people say they got mis-wired ones). I will still test the 7040 first with the original hardware before I move the PSU & GPU over though!

JOcean is correct. The 24 to 8 pin adapter is never validated by Dell so its use is all based on vendor or user anecdote. Based on all evidence Dell uses same proprietary 8 pin out in 7020/7040 and XE2. Just a word of caution on vendor ad on all Dell compatible models they listed, it is sometimes slightly incorrect with possible typos, and you can not take every word on their ad to the bank. it is the fact that the adapter is 24 to 8 pin and your confidence that matter.
PS even Dell makes documentation error at times. Caveat Emptor.

Just a reminder both 3020 and 7040 MB's are 8 pin.
So, if you plan on using the PSU that you used in the 3020 in your 7040, it won't fit. MT's are no longer full size. Or, are you dealing with SFF's? It's not said.

Ouch. Hadn't considered that. I just fired up the 7040 and wondered about it being noticeably smaller... The PSU is an EVGA 700BR, do you happen to know if that will work?

EVGA BR 700w PSU would have to sit outside the case of the 7040.
Won't be purdee, but will still work with 24 pin to 8 pin adapter. Inspiron MT case above is same size as 7040 MT.
Even the MT's come with smaller in size PSU's.

That's annoying, thanks for digging that out, will save me some time trying to ram it in there. I'm generally a "glass half full" person, so the benefit will be to keep the PSU and GPU much further apart from each other and therefore make everything left in the case much cooler...!

I like your "thanks for digging that out." Did your GPU fit inside the case? If not, it's not purdee, but they make GPU extenders so GPU can sit outside the case.

Don't know yet, tonight after work is when I finally have time to tackle the upgrade process. Last night I wanted to first confirm my new (old) 7040 was fully functional before I ventured into the case, including loading up the game (Zwift) to see how it looks with the on-board graphics. I was quickly reminded why I wanted the GPU. Hopefully it will fit, but the info in your post is good to have because when it doesn't I already know the solution...

Hopefully my final post on this thread... the PSU upgrade went fine, it's sitting outside the case but as mentioned I don't mind that in the end, because it means the GPU is sitting in much clearer air and its fans can move air thru it much more effectively than if the PSU was so close on that side. GPU did fit fine no problems (although the bendy end to the PCIe slot had been broken off by the previous owner, hopefully that won't come back to bite me later). I even added some fresh thermal paste onto the CPU, which was really shriveled and dry and having seen the state of that, I'm betting my 3020 tanked because I overheated the CPU.
So, thank you to JOcean, redxps630 and bradthetechnut for all your help. I know where to go now, if I have problems in the future.

You're welcome. : ) Glad you got it working.
As for CPU, when they get to hot, they get throttled back first before shutting down.
"Bendy end" is the locking lever.
