7070 usb to serial adapters not working
We are having issues with standard USB to DB9 serial adapters not working with Dell 7070 micro’s. They worked fine on all prior optiplex models. They are recognized but for some reason when we print to the attached printer, nothing happens. We were only able to resolve this with a more expensive digi brand adapter. We use these to connect receipt printers. Does anyone else have this issue?

Is this a Win 10 issue? Were the others NOT Win 10?
I've had problems (custom built PC's not Dell) and only found one USB/RS232C adapter that reliably works in Win 10.

No, it worked fine on our 7060 Micros and prior with windows 10.

I don't see much hardware difference, both have 3.1 ports.
As these are new, best to contact Dell support or support for the adapter (if there is any).

similar problem, only affecting Dell 7070. eSeek M280 scanner used to use a "USB to UART Device" driver. That gets replaced by a "Cypress UCM Client Peripheral Driver" and causes 'scanner is busy' errors.

There is no such thing as "standard USB to DB9 serial adapters " and with USB3 this gets worse.
What Brand and what hardware ID are these.
Some older units DO NOT WORK correctly because there are no new WHQL drivers.
So you have to find out if there is a specific PL-2303 USB to Serial adapter or FTDI usb to serial is required.

wow no "receipt printers". told make and model why make the job so hard??????
i have piles of these here for 2 decades, when RS323 port ended,
x2, on WHQL w10 support and these facts x2 FTDI devices,
after the PNP happens,in device manager, see what COM port W10 chose for THAT device, then set BAUD next. once test the port with loop back plug and using REALTERM (free) ask.(JUMP PIN 2 TO 3, EASY)
at the other end ,most devices need that all setup, too, the full com setting must match, if you 96k baud in to any 9600 baud printer you get zero, (8 or 7bit and no parity mostly. but look)
this RS323, is not comm parameter agile. at all. ! at all like USB is, ok? you must set both ends for it work.
no printer stated so I ramble,. technoloy common are: fixed settings , dip switches or jumper settings, or LCD push button setting? Screen local to printers.)
last printer I had in early 80s, was Daisy wheel printer, (yah) RS323,
if device manager shows the COM1 to x port is working and is ID marked right, brand, FTDI?
in BIOS do not have RS232 ports enabled or get contentions, some older dells have that. turn it off.
and last what printer is it, name and model.
I use RS232 here for my SDR , radios and my frequency analyzers and more.
zero issue ever, unless set up wrong. do you have the book on your printer?, look there first for SETTINGS.

SEE THIS? GOT THIS? coM3 WILL VARY, BUT ON THE RIGHT MATCH THE PRINTER YOU MUST.
CLICK ID'S AND I can decode any ID to maker and model easy, PCI tables are online, at at MS, PnP servers.
I guess you PC is internet connected if not why expect PnP to work?

I suggest you start your own thread because OP was talking about using adapters on old serial RS-232 receipt printers for a Point-of-Sale application.
Your eSeek M280 has a native USB-Port (which is correct for now-days) so you are good. I suggest you ask them for a proper/working Windows 64-bit driver. You might have to install it in "Compatibility Mode".

What you are seeing is likely less about the OptiPlex hardware, and more about Windows and drivers (ie, software). Also, self-test the scanner and make sure it even works.
