780 USFF - upgrade CPU to AES-NI
hello - i am looking for advice on upgrading the Intel E8600 CPU in this optiplex 780 USFF.
i need a CPU that supports AES-NI because this is going to be repurposed as a pfsense/opnsense router. I've removed the front bezel and replaced the front I/O board with a Jetway ADMPEIDLB 2-port Gigabit LAN - Intel i350 - mini pcie network card.
I see it is possible to install an lga-771-to-775-adapter but the system board is not compatible with Intel 5xxx series ..
so can I replace the stock motherboard with a newer model? swap in a motherboard from another newer dell USFF? or purchase a non-dell motherboard that will fit in this USFF?

No such thing. All Dell motherboards are Proprietary.

thanks for reply .. so CPU AES-NI upgrade on 780 USFF is not possible?

Advanced Encryption Standard Instruction Set (or the Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions; AES-NI) is an extension to the x86 instruction set architecture for microprocessors from Intel and AMD. Has nothing whatsoever to do with any specific motherboard. Has to do with the Processor. LGA 771 and 775 need not apply because its not there.
The following Intel processors support the AES-NI instruction set:
Westmere based processors, specifically:
Westmere-EP (Xeon 56xx) (a.k.a. Gulftown Xeon 5600-series DP server model) processors. Socket 1366 aka Dell Precision T3500 or 2010 Mac Pro Tower.
