Best GPU for a Dell Optiplex 7010 DT?

I just bought a refurbished OptiPlex 7010 DT and want to find a good GPU that will fit and work in a DT. I think the GT 1030 will work, but maybe the GTX 1050 2 GB will work too. If not what will? Has to meet the power requriements of the PSU and the board.

there is no best, the OP never stated how he defined best.

on GPU cards its endless, the topic, (same with sound)

go to Newegg.com  and click GPU..

then read the left side column   , after picking low profile cards first. (next time get the MT for more choices)

see all those features, some good to  you , and many useless to me.

there is NO SUCH thing as best.

for some it's like 3 DP ports and having 3 monitors.

others it's resolution max.  or shaders or speed,  there is no best. (to you YES< and only to YOU)

"Also 7010 does have Secure Boot and they can run in UEFI, don't listen to this misinformation being spread here"

Secure Boot is not compatible with any 32 bit os including MSDOS and  windows XP.

7010 models can run 32 bit windows XP.

So I completely disagree that  UEFI Class 2.3.1  secure boot is possible.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/oem-uefi

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/how13914/optiplex-7010-xp-driver-cab?lang=en

3020/7020/9020 models do support Windows 10 and Secure boot.

Last bios update for 7010 may have changed this but you cannot jump from A01 to A29 in a single step.

All hardware vendors have stated that computers from now on will be 64 bit only and windows 10 only.  This is also why newer video cards do not work because the old Class 1 bios uses MSDOS VESA Video mode 103 for F2 setup. NON DELL Cards will not post in any model when secure boot is on with a class 2.3.1 uefi bios.

Class 2.3.1 bios systems Do not support booting 32 bit os of any kind.

The interface defined by the EFI/UEFI 2.3.1 specification includes security certificates that contain platform information, and boot and runtime services that are available to the OS loader and OS. UEFI firmware also has the SLP windows key in BIOS and ability to boot from large disks (over 2 TB) with a GUID Partition Table (GPT).

Its completely disingenuous to say that any 7010 from 2011 has 2012 windows 8 bios.

End users do not have the ability to add BIOS key.

The 7010 does have a UEFI based bios but its from the earlier specification from 2009.

In July 2005, Intel ceased its development of the EFI specification at version 1.10, and contributed it to the Unified EFI Forum.

The UEFI 2.3.1 specification (or higher) defines a protocol known as secure boot, which can secure the boot process by preventing the loading of drivers or OS loaders that are not signed with an acceptable digital signature.

Thats why secure boot must be OFF for NON DELL hardware.  End users do not have the ability to put hardware or software certificates into bios.

Class 3 UEFI removes CSM so you can no longer use legacy hardware or option roms.

The 3010 7010 9010 has Class 1 bios.

UEFI machines can have one of the following "classes", for the transition to UEFI.

  • Class 0:Legacy BIOS
  • Class 1:Legacy BIOS/UEFI code, although it does not support Secure boot.
  • Class 2:UEFI with CSM  Version 2.3.1 and up from 2012 on supports win8 & 10 and the key is in bios.
  • Class 3:UEFI without CSM is windows 10 only 64 bit only.

Hey guys, I just made an account here cause I bought a new desktop which is a dell 7010. From what the title says it says its a tower, not sure from the pic if its a MT or Desktop, but I'm sure its a normal tower for a desktop. This is what it looks like from the vendor that's selling it. Obviously, I'm not going to be running on the default card to play the game, what's the latest graphic card that I could install on it that doesn't take much electricity nor need me to upgrade the power supply? Thanks!

Here are the specs - Dell OptiPlex 7010 Tower i7-3770 3.4GHz 8GB RAM 240GB SSD DVD-RW Win10 Pro 64

Could I use the https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=100-BR-0450-K1?

It's cheaper lol. And would it be able to run the 1050? How about the 1650?

Thanks

Combined power on 3.3V/5V rails is 120w

AMPS on 3.3V is 20

Both are TOO SMALL for 75w card so no you cant use that.

Thats why the B1 version is fine and B2 BQ N1 W1 versions of the 750W unit FROM THE SAME VENDOR do not work.

Almost all dells including 305W units for towers have 150W combined on the 3.3v/5v rails.

Its because it uses 23 amps on the 3.3v rails for 75W power to the X16 video slot.  23 amps @ 3.3v = 75W

20 AMPS is too low for the 3.3v rails.

Dell 875w units have 225W combined on these rails with 30 amps on the 3.3v rails.

So, I've been doing a lot of research and talked to my friend about power supply. I come to found out the tower that I had is a MT just as Xenos said. I then bought a desktop tower which is a normal tower. He said its also considered an ATX. Now, I just got a 150ti 4gb from him as well, cheaper than what most people say. But with that, I'm not going to do heavy gaming, maybe I'll play CS go or I'll just watch movies but no heavy gaming. I'm going to be mostly using it for light softwares. But its going be used for everyday gaming. I also bought the 400w supply, I did the power supply calculator and it seem to not go above 400w nor is it near 350w or so. Its about in the 300w as recommended.

I heard a lot of people got their gpu or motherboard burned. Is that true? Thanks!

Where is a 400W PSU for Optiplex 7010 DT sold? I have that model & cannot fit one for an ATX case in there, don't care for running one outside of the PC. It would be easier to purchase a used Optiplex MT & then upgrade PSU and then GPU. May have to move drive cage for some cards, plenty of YouTube videos on how to with clean look.

While I'd love to have the 128 bit 4GB GTX 1660 (GDDR5), don't think the PSU will handle it, so am running the MSI GT 1030 with 2GB GDDR5. Powerful card for price & watching video, pushing a non-HDR 4K monitor fine at 10 bit color. Looks almost as good my 4K HDR monitor of the same size (28 inches) on the Displayport connection.

At any rate, I'd be interested in the 400W PSU for the 7010 DT model, please provide link where can be purchased.

Regards,

Cat

Hello, I don't have the 7010, I have the 9010 DT. And I'm going to be returning the 400w, it's not good PSU. But I got a 500w for $50 from Seasonic s12iii on Amazon. But just wanted to know if this PSU will fit.

The cable layout is like so:

1 x 24-pin motherboard (sheathed)
1 x 4/8-pin CPU (sheathed)
2 x 6/8-pin PCIe (sheathed)
2 x 4 SATA (not sheathed)
1 x 3 molex (not sheathed)
1 x floppy (not sheathed

Hey Cat, you should get this power supply for your 7010 DT - CX550m unit from Corsair. I want about 100-150w more than what is expected. I'd say 450-550 is enough.

What, you mean run the PSU (CX550m) out of the PC?

Have never ran a PSU outside of a Optiplex DT (or any DT/SFF PC), other than to test the PSU for damage. Not as a permanent solution, although if had no other choice I would. It would be better to find a Optiplex 7010 MT case & move the MB into it, then install whatever GPU desired. The HDD cage can be moved to make the necessary room.

Currently, have too many better PC's to bother with upgrading the GPU in this manner. The MSI GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 GPU which Speedstep suggested had been installed long ago, uses only 30 watts & can power a 4K monitor with ease for browser & video. If I want to game, have other options.

Cat

Why bother with a GDDR5 GTX 1650 when one can have a GDDR6 model running at 12000 MHz? Which isn't possible with a 4GB GDDR5 GPU. 50% more memory performance for the same price or lower. Newegg has the card in stock, my prior link was removed.

Specs from Gigabyte below.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N1656OC-4GL/sp#sp

Word being there's a shortage of GDDR5 memory chips, we may see more cards use the GDDR6 RAM. Wow, and still powered by the GPU slot!

In regards to the GDDR6 Gigabyte GPU I linked above, memory bandwidth is also faster, at 192MB/sec (versus 128GB/sec for GDDR5 versions). Another 50% performance increase! The issue would be if it can run properly in the Optiplex 7010 w/out a PSU upgrade. I did run a 60W card in my Optiplex 7010 DT when purchased, but was nowhere near this performance & couldn't do 4K. So moved the MSI 2GB GDDR5 OC LP from my Optiplex 780 into it, a 30W card that performs for the cost at time.

Have fun with upgrading, am considering purchasing for another PC. Most likely, even though it's a 75W card, one Newegg reviewer says it runs hot when benchmarking with Heaven's & others by the same company. May indeed be an issue with the stock PSU. Yet if one has an extra PSU of 350W or higher laying around & don't mind running outside the case, should be fine. While the recommended is 300W, may be best to add a little more for safety......that's up to you!

Cat

Sorry for any confusion, I need to correct the above, when I said 'easier to purchase a used Optiplex MT', was meaning a case, not a whole PC! I've seen various Optiplex bare cases for cheap on eBay (Note: Amazon is EXPENSIVE), some may use the near exact case for more than one model. However, I suggest discussing which exact models are such before purchasing that of another (make sure this case, the MB & connectors for the Optiplex 7010 MT versus DT is all OK. Just saying, easier to purchase the proper model used Optiplex MT case & avoid issues.

I used to build Dells from scraps in the recycle bin & resell for extra cash, plus gave a few away to family/friends......it was & still is a learning experience. But I don't live in the same city as then & nowhere close to 50+ mid sized businesses. Used to walk across the block every week & there'd be 2-3 computers (Optiplex 755-780 & Latitude C340 & D610's. It was fun making these things work, but would have to charge because hard drives were seldom included. Had to find on eBay for the cheap & pray. No, I tested their health with 4-5 tools to deep scan & format, then bench each.

I apologize for any confusion.

Regards,

Cat

It's okay Cat. I don't know too much about computers myself and this is my first time build a computer. I'm not like those that know how to buy each part from pcpartpicker and add everything together. I like things simple, do a few tweak here and there and you're ready to go lol. I like to learn as I go as well but maybe one day I would like to see how each one works.
