Dell Optiplex 980 SFF gaming upgrade

Optiplex models are intended for business use. No amount of upgrades--if upgrades were even possible-- will make it a gaming computer. The 980 is 10 years old. The 755 is 13 yrs old.

i think I’m going to take out the psu from the 755 which is a 285 watt and use it for the 980 even though it won’t fit, I’ll just put in on the desk.

with the GPU I’ve decided I might try save up for a gtx 1050 as they seem to be quite good and low power consuming.

Dell is very proprietary.  Nothing will line up if you try to move 980 SFF MB and components to 755 DT case.

What PSU do you plan on getting for your 980?

The good news is:

Graphic card and processor will work great together:

Intel Core i7-860 (Clock speed at 130%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 2.4% of bottleneck.

However, a 120w card in an SFF is quite unlikely.  Even if you upgraded to a 315w Optiplex XE2 PSU, it still wouldn't be enough.

The 30w GT 1030 comes often recommended, notably by one of our Rockstars, for various Optiplex's.  And you wouldn't have upgrade PSU's.

Graphic card and processor will work great together:

By the way, even if you could use a 400w Dell Vostro SFF PSU, likely screw holes and any tabs won't line up.

That's another thing with PSU upgrades.  Sometimes, to get the PSU a person wants for DT or SFF, it has to sit outside the case.
