Jump to solution

This is a Optiflex 5060 small form factor tower. this is a new system 2 weeks old

at first i couldn't get any jack to work. front or rear. so i downloaded realtek driver from the dell support page and after installing the driver rear jack started working.

but i need the front panel jack because  sometimes i need to unplug the headset and carry with me.

The OEM audio driver and waves max may need to be deinstalled and re installed after every windows 10 feature update before it will "Detect" what is in any particular jack.

The updates stomp on the OEM drivers.

TRRS headsets require specific splitter.

Everyone uses the Iphone6 type headset so apple changed theirs to lightning.

CTIA trrl headsets require a splitter.

If you have windows you will need to remove the oem audio driver and reboot.  Then reinstall the OEM driver from dell to detect items plugged in.

If you have Win7 or 10, you might need to click on the speaker icon in Control Panel.  Click whatever is necessary to make sure the front jack is on.  Do this while your headset is plugged into it.

I put the speaker icon on my desktop in case anything ever decides to not work.

This is in addition to speedstep's suggestions in case they're still necessary, not a replacement.

What happens if you disable the internal speaker in sound settings?

While you're there, be sure the front and rear speaker jacks are set as the defaults..

Right click the speaker or sound icon in the taskbar, select open sound settings. from there you can find lots of other sound and speaker related settings pages. Try the sound control panel near the bottom.

The trouble with microsoft is they've strewn settings all over the place and often renamed things (usually quite illogically). It's different in each minor release too. windows 10 is their worst example yet. For example, to set sound to mono, you won't find that in any sound settings ... No, it's in the ease of access settings.

Try to track down all the goofy settings strewn everywhere and see if you might find anything that looks suspicious. I'm thinking it probably isn't a hardware problem since you can get it to work by following a certain ritual.

Hi @Sunethw,

Remember I mentioned sound settings (speaker icon) in the Control Panel.  That's where to make sure all jacks are on.  With your headset plugged in the front jack, set it as default.

The speaker icon in the taskbar will mainly give you sliders.  The sliders are different for Win7 and Win10.  May be there is a speaker volume there that's at zero?  I don't know.  But the ability to turn jacks on and off is in the sound settings in Control Panel.  Please refer to my previous post if necessary.  Thank you for continuing to post as to how it's going.
