No USB Keyboard & Mouse on start up

Optiplex 755 Win 10 64bit Yesterday decided to do a clean install via Windows options. All sorted, booted up, no USB mouse or keyboard can be used. Read all the posts regarding removing the Win 10 update that caused this to happen, but as it’s a clean install it can’t find the update. Tried through CMD too. I’ve reset the BIOS and still nothing. Haven’t got another PC to build a USB Boot Pen. I can’t get into safe mode at all. There are no PS/2 options either. Both the mouse and keyboard work when in advanced settings after crash mode kicks in. Is there anything I can do other than buy a boot USB from eBay? The next time I can get on another PC is next Sunday. Anything else I can try?

Have you tried unplugging and using different ports? I have Win10 on a 755 with no problems. I always use the 2 usb ports next to the nic on the rear for mouse and keyboard.

I have tried all the ports, including the two on the front. Never had this issue before.

Thanks for the suggestion

It did boot to log in screen, but couldn’t enter password, so tried a complete wipe and clean install.

Now it boots to setup screen with Cortana.

I know the keyboard and mouse works as I can use them during advanced crash start up.

Just bloody annoying as it was working before the reinstall

Does it boot to desktop/sign-in screen? If so have you tried unplugging the mouse/keyboard and trying a new port then? I had one years ago that worked on and after getting updates everything sorted itself.

Could be a bad install. Since it's fresh install with no data might be worth a shot to just wipe and reinstall again.

There are no issues with Optiplex GX620 all the way thru 990.

Your clean install has issues and or you have a broken/shorted usb port.

Dos, WIN31, WIN95, WIN98, XP, VISTA, 7, 8, 10.

Machines infected with specific malware wont work any usb ports.

The USB 2.0 ports in these models have no issues.

You can buy a new tower for the cost of windows alone.

Not only was that scenario rare, it was a temporary situation ... and that troublesome Windows update has been long ago depreciated.

I really doubt that is your problem. I suggest you follow @speedstep  advice.

Hi @Loudleyther ,

Just bloody annoying as it was working before the reinstall

I know how it feel bro. Sh-it happens. You may work on the followings for further diagnostic:

Port test with an USB memory stick

Have you got any USB memory stick on hand? If yes, try to test those USB ports on your PC when Windows is running. You can at least hear a specific sound when plug it in, and somehow identify if those ports still work or not.

Try alternative Windows installation source

Is your Win10 installation source the latest build? You mentioned that there would be another PC arrive on Sunday. Try to create a new Win10 installation source by media creation tool from that PC. Meanwhile, if you still got Win7 installation source for the problematic Optiplex 755, try it. And if keyboard and mouse work fine in Win7, you can then try an upgrade from Win7 to Win10.

Wired or Wireless USB

Were your USB keyboard and mouse wired or wireless? Sometimes wireless K&M may not work properly on old PC. Try a wired one if possible.

That's all I can think of now. Good luck.

1809 actual Physical DVD's are available now as system builder disks.

I highly advise you buying one of them along with USB 2.0 external Drive.

That way you have a universal reinstall media that will not go bad or be End of life in 6 months.

The other issue with 1809 vs 1803 is that you need to burn a dvd onto DUAL LAYER media because its larger than 4.7 gigs now.  DVD Disks should be burned at 1x or 2x or 4x max.  8x or faster will have issues.

One of the Drives I recommend is actually a blue Ray Burner so it can also do data image backups onto 25 gig Blue Ray Media.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IPH6170

The reason for recommending this model is that you don't have to worry about how much power the usb port provides.  It also works fine with the Dell Recovery tool because Blueray Disks are 25 gigs.  You need at least 16 gigs to store a factory recovery image.  My complaining clients pay for a service call or buy the Media That I recommend.

You only have to buy 1.   You can use the Key from WIN7 or 8 or 10 for home or pro. (You clean install offline and indicate that you do not have a key. Then choose Home or Pro based on your COA key and activate online.)

I suggest paying 1 time for the PRO media.  This will not have issues with Booting or installing from USB DVD drive or from onboard IDE or SATA DVD drive EXCEPT if the Drive does not have the Region Code Set.

Most Of the Media I buy locally is not burned but rather stamped media that is Region 1 encoded.

So you cant F12 boot from it until you have the Region Code Set for the DVD.   This is usually only a problem for OLDER models like the GX620.  You only have to fix this one time and you never need to do it again.

I have been using UBUNTU 18.04.1  DVD's and the Regionset Tool for systems that don't have a copy of windows XP/VISTA/7/8/10 on them.  Then I reformat the drive and clean install 1809 from DVD and it works perfectly for all models either from USB DVD drive or internal DVD Drive.

While not supported ALL MODELS From 2006 on work fine with windows 7 or 8 or 10.  The earliest models aka GX620 must have bios updated to A11 and cpu updated to Pentium D 915 minimum so that 64 bit windows 8.1 or 10 work.   Prior to 2006 cpu's are missing NX, EMT 64, LAHF SAHF, CMPXCHG 128 and other REQUIRED instructions for Install.
