OptiPlex 5040 Upgrade HDD to NVMe M.2 SSD

Parts needed to install a M.2 device into a M.2 slot:

1x R7HGK - Thermal pad (installs onto the motherboard under the M.2 drive)

1x YYJF8 - Screw M2X3.5

1x DHR6X - Spacer (between the motherboard and M.2 drive)

I tried ordering from Dell, but was told they don’t sell these things, instead told to use Amazon, etc.

Ordered the “M. 2 SSD mounting Screws Kit” from Amazon.  It works.

But I cannot find a thermal pad like what is shown in the picture:

  1. Do I need the thermal pad?
  2. Is it the same as the thermal pads that measure 70x20x1mm or 70x20x1.5mm?
  3. Is it to protect the controller that sits on the motherboard?  What is this controller chip anyway?
  4. Or is it to protect the SSD?

heat can damage the SSD.  it allows the heat to go somewhere else.

Pads are passive they dont cool they conduct heat to another place.
