Optiflex 990 MT with Core i5 2500 CPU Upgrade
Hi there,
I have an Optiflex 990 (Mid Tower) with an i5 2500 CPU that I would like to upgrade. A few questions:
1. Can I upgrade the CPU to an i7 2600?
2. Can I add more RAM and what is the maximum. According to DELL ,the maximum is 16GB but I have read many forum threads saying 32Gb will also work...
3. I would also like to change the disk for a SSD (1 Tb). Will it be supported? And which brand do you recommend?
Thanks for your help,
Christian Dubuc

As for an SSD, yes, a 1TB will work in it. Go with a name brand vs. cheapy brand. Crucial, PNY, and WD (Western Digital) are good brands just to name 3. I hear Kingston doesn't come recommended for their SSD's.

" K " CPU's use over 95W S CPUS are 65W whereas the "T" cpus use 45W.
All 790 990 units have LESS THAN 300W power supply.
95W cpu needs optional 365W power supply minimum.
65W is marginal I would not risk damage.
2600S is 65W

2600K is not a good idea unless you upgrade cooling solution to copper and power supply.

So a 2600 SR00B (3.4 Ghz) would work fine without having to change the Power Supply?

If you try 32GB RAM, make sure you have the BIOS that's the latest for your 990 first. 32GB RAM isn't supported by Dell, but some users have done it.
Below will be some screengrabs from this thread - https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General-Read-Only/32GB-RAM-in-an-Optiplex-790-990/td-p/3880625
