Optiplex 3070 - What i need to add ssd as OS

Question

Hi all, I want to ask, what i need to add SSD as OS & HDD as files drive? What type of SSD i can install? & What extension cable do i need? My desktop is Optiplex 3070 Please help

is your 3070 tower, SFF, or micro?

ssd can be either 2.5 or M.2. see Optiplex 3070 SFF documentation.

entry level option is 2.5 ssd and you just install it in the hdd bay along with the existing 3.5 hdd in a tower.

in SFF you may not be able to install both 2.5 and 3.5 (unless you use adapter to switch odd to a 2nd 2.5 drive).

refer to service manual for instructions.

The SATA NVME is no faster than onboard Sata HDD.

NVME drives require mounting screw.

PCI-E NVME drives also require thermal pad and heatsink.

So going that way is the MOST DIFFICULT way to add an SSD.

Either requires BIOS SATA OPERATION to be set to AHCI.

The F2 bios default is INTEL RST OPTANE RAID sata operation.

You can then use the windows 10 media tool to create a USB2 FAT32 flash drive.

you can use either sata or NVMe M.2 ssd.  sata is about 1/2 price of NVMe of same capacity.  NVMe is faster.  most users do not notice difference in speed. SFF: M.2 Socket 3 (for SATA / NVMe SSD)

SFF does not have the power or the connections for multiple drives.

If you have optional optical drive you can remove that and put an SSD drive in a special caddy.

Windows 2 Go is depricated and no longer supported. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/planning/windows-10-deprecated-features Windows To Go Windows To Go is no longer being developed. The feature does not support feature updates and therefore does not enable you to stay current. It also requires a specific type of USB that is no longer supported by many OEMs.

Pretty sure you can.

Why don't you download and read the Optiplex 3070 SFF PDF manual and find-out for sure. You would want to before tackling the project anyway.
