Optiplex 390MT: Mic not working when plugged into front panel's 3.5 mm outlet.
I have Optiplex 390MT and can not get mic working when plugged into the front or rear 3.5mm outlet.
I am trying to use my regular wired 3.5mm cell phone headphones (mic+speaker) as a microphone for my desktop. What I do I plug the 3.5mm jack into front panel's outlet (and rear panel too) for microphone. The heaphones get recognized, however they do not capture any incoming sound.
Am I missing drivers or there is some config that need be done?
currently it says I am using Conexant HD Audio driver.
I found similar discussion here:
https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General-Read-Only/head-phones-not-working-when-plugged-into-front-panel-head-phone/td-p/5092990
however this does not apply to me since I do not have anything else plugged into my audio inputs/outputs in rear or front.
Thanks,

390 front panel has separate 3.5 mm microphone and headphone connector ports. see pg.3
https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optiplex-390-tech-guide.pdf
your combo plugged in headphone jack will only work as headphone but not microphone at same time. there are USB type headphone/mic combo that may work provided appropriate driver is installed.

as far as I know the 3.5 microphone jack is only for input and headphone jack is only for output. if you plug a combo jack into either port, you only get what the jack is supposed to do, which is one thing only.

@redxps630 ,
Yes I am when I plug my combo headphones into 3.5mm mic jack I expect headphones to work as mic only.
Is that a reasonable expectation?
For some reason it is not what I see in my case; hence original question.
