Optiplex 7010MT: can I replace an i3 with an i5?

My company just gave me a used Optiplex 7010 Mini-Tower with an i3 CPU.

  1. If I find an i5 CPU in working order, can I insert it in place of the i3 without changing the motherboard?
  2. (And what if I find an i7?)
  3. If there are specific parameters / pitfalls to consider, please point me to them.  Wooff!
  4. This old PC has a sticker with a product key for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.  I will first wipe the hard drive and install Win 10 Pro 64-bit onto this PC while it has the i3 and using that product key (which is still a thing that works)  ►Will then changing to an i5 upset the Microsoft activation of the Win 10?
  5. By the way, one of my motives for switching to an i5 is to improve the PCIe in this machine from Gen 2 to Gen 3.  i3 CPUs provide only PCIe Gen 2, and i5s can provide Gen 3.  Do you think I'll not get the Gen 3 even with the i5?

Please refer to my question numbers above when you provide your wisdom.

Thanks.

@glnz

I3 I5 I7 is fine but bios should be updated to latest BEFORE changing CPU.

Max upgrade is 3770K and requires DDR3 1600 ram  PC3L 1.35v  12800

CPU Does NOT change Chipset which means PCI-E 3.0 is NOT an option or upgrade.

speedstep - you are amazing.

Question - you say PCI-e 3 is NOT an option.  However, if I follow your link to the technical manual, on its page 15, its footnote 2 says "PCIe x16 Slots (Support Standard Rev 3.0)".

Doesn't that mean that the PCIe x 16 slot WILL provide PCIe Gen 3 if I have an i5 or i7 CPU?

Thanks.

The Q77 chipset supports pci-e 2.X

The intel Graphics on the cpu is pci-e 3.0

A gpu goes thru the chipset to the cpu. There may be an option for 3.0 graphics but the X16 slot is wired X8 not X16 so the equivalent bandwidth would still be PCI-E 2.x

yes, you can upgrade it but check the compatibility of motherboard.

Speedstep -

http://www.jetwayipc.com/Manual/G03-NF9E-F.pdf

says that q77 chipset pcie slot will function as v2 when paired with a sandy bridge processor and will work as v3 when paired with ivy bridge processor.  (Maybe only the x16 slot?)

See the Note at the bottom of page 4 (pdf page 9) of G03-NF9E-F.pdf

What do you think?

This is a link to a CPU-Z report on the Optiplex 7010 MT with the i3 that I would like toupgrad to an i5 or i7

You might have to download it to see it correctly.  (It's in HTML form.)

So, again, what do you think?  Will the upgrade get me PCIe 3 in any of the PCIe slots?

@glnz

The Jetway board only has ONE PCI-E slot.  The 7010 has 4 slots.  You don't get more bandwidth with more slots you get LESS. You also dont get X16 lane width on more than One Slot so again you seem to be demanding more than the chipset supports.

There is a max bandwidth that the cpu supports which is 24 total lanes.  Each piece of the bus uses some of those lanes aka USB3, Network, Video, other PCI-E slots etc.  PCI-E  3.0 X8  is the SAME bandwidth as PCI-E 2.0 X16.

So the answer is no and no and not ever.
