Optiplex 780, 2408WFP, HDMI not working

When I connect my 2408WFPb to my Optiplex 780 via the HDMI ports and select HDMI on the monitor as DELL-Chris M said in this 2014 thread, it just goes into power saving mode and nothing else happens. The screen remains dark with nothing displayed in it.

Using a tv as a monitor is the only one that requires selecting the hdmi input. Computer monitors select it automatically if you have an hdmi port on the computer. I don't think you do on that old model.

There are no HDMI ports on a 780.

DVI to HDMI works but has no sound.

Models like the 780 do not support using ONBOARD video and another port.

HDMI requires Video card and DRIVERS as these are not built into windows.

If you try it will try to display the following message

System halted!
Attention: Unsupported Video Configuration Detected

Action is Required

This computer has an add-in graphics card, but the monitor is plugged
into the integrated video connector.
To attach the monitor cable to the add-in graphics card:

1. Shut down the computer
2. Plug the monitor cable into the add-in graphics card connector.
This may require a video adapter or video adapter cable.
(provided with the system)
3. Turn on the computer.

This message should not appear after completing these steps.
For more information or help, please refer to the system documentation

Windows version as well a make and model of the card are not trivial. Stock power supply is for 25W cards.  That limits the cards that actually work.

Full Size cards don't fit. Short cards fit and they MUST BE only 1 slot wide. The card must not be more than 40W unless you upgrade to EVGA 700BR or similar with an adapter due to non standard 24 pin connector which is the recommended minimum for a 780 mini tower. The 8800 GT Single Slot Card is the highest performance card that fits into the case. If you want to use real cards you have to buy a Precision T3500.

Many cards that would work are now legacy so the only driver that gets installed is the VGA driver which wont support HDMI.
