Optiplex GX 280 Hard drive not booting

You did not mention the form factor of your 280. The mini towers had space for 2 HDDs. In that case you can install another HDD or SSD and clean install Windows on the new drive. That way you may be able to retrieve the files from the old drive. Or you can install the old drive in a drive enclosure and using the same procedure install a new drive, install Windows, and retrieve the files. That is assuming the drive can be accessed and has not completely failed.

A dock might work however given the age of the unit the drive is likely dead.

Unless you are willing to pay $500 for diagnostics and $3500 for recovery its probably gone.

The drive is physically bad drive and or motherboard with BAD CAPS.

There is no user "recovery" for an 18 year old drive.

This is a WIN2000 or XP drive that is crashed permanently.

Not a user fixable or reinstall-able drive.   Its Dead Jim.

This may be a Lo-Cost/No-Cost solution.....  print it out?

It maybe that an old system will want a very light version of Linux, but the principle still holds.

EG:  Lubuntu    (https://www.techradar.com/news/best-lightweight-linux-distro)
