Is part number WPJY9 compatible with a PowerEdge 2900 III
Hi all,
I've got a PowerEdge 2900 III with a PERC 6/i Integrated Controller Card. I asked my Dell rep for a quote for a replacement hard drive, and after discussing the size and speed I was going for, they quoted me part number WPJY9. This is a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" caddy.
Is part number WPJY9 compatible with my system?

It sounds like they told you what I just said. It is validated to function on a PERC6. I don't see a reason it will not work with your system, but it is not in the part list for a 2900. The 2900 is end of life, so if we stop carrying a part for that server we may not validate newer components and modify the part list for the server. I don't see a reason to be concerned about the drive causing data corruption or any other issues.

No, that drive is not validated for the 2900. I show that drive is only validated for an R510. The drive may still work in a 2900. Compatibility is mainly with the PERC, and the R510 can use a PERC6i. So, that drive is validated to function with a PERC6i.
Based on the drive specs, this is the most similar drive I was able to locate that is validated for the 2900.
M530M - 600GB, 3.5", SAS, 15k

Since I last spoke with you, I received WPJY9 in the mail. The reason I ordered it is because my Dell rep said it was a replacement part for W347K, which I have ordered for the server in the past. For peace of mind, I reached out to Dell technical support, gave them the server's service tag, and asked if WPJY9 is compatible - they said yes, the PERC 6/i Integrated controller will detect it and there is no risk for data corruption that can sometimes happen with these hybrid drives in older systems. So I went ahead and installed it in the server and things seem to be working fine.
Does what the Dell technical support agent said sound alright to you? I'm glad that it seems to be working in the server just fine, but my main concern is...am I risking any data corruption by keeping it in there?
