PERC6/i (R710/2970) RAID battery shelf life

Hello,


We keep a stock of RAID batteries for PE R710. I am suspecting that most of them are quite old. Ones that have manufacturing dates on labels are from 2010-2011. That makes me worry that if we use them for repairs they will fail if not outright then after couple of months.

Things to consider:

- most likely were never deployed,

- Li-Ion cell shelf life limits,

- no special storage procedures, these weren't periodically recharged, might be completely drained,

- we have a sizeable quantity and I was informed that they are quite costly,

I was thinking about testing them and the best idea I've had was to put them into a chassis and run them through a learning cycle. Do you think it's even worth it or we should just replace them?

They are most likely fine - at least to see you through an extended life of an R710. I would recommend rotating batteries stored "on the shelf" to maintain their capacity and health.

I agree with the need to rotate batteries in use and have mentioned it to our inventory team a while ago. I was wondering if there is a way to get condition of the battery from some diagnostic tool. I know you get an alert when capacity is less than 24h, but what about other cases? There is no alert but I would still like to know how a particular battery compares to a new one.

There isn't a diagnostic that will return specific numbers for comparison, but you could run a learning cycle against each battery. If the charge does not meet some criteria, it will trigger a pred fail for the battery. If the battery ceases to be able to hold a charge, it will also trigger a failure alert. The learning cycle will run automatically every 90 days. I would recommend 90-day rotations or longer to make sure each battery goes through one.
