Server keeps freezing and is getting worse
Hi,
Over the last few weeks the system (Dell PowerEdge SC440 Windows Server 2003
for small business server- out of warranty by 3 months!) has started to
freeze. The screen freezes with no mouse movement or keyboard input
registered.
It started just every few days then sometimes twice a day then every few
days then once a day and today every 10 minutes or so.
I have changed the RAM (After the Health Monitor showed an error with the
RAM) and also the LAN card (there wasn't any errors but I thought I should
try it) but although they seemed to make a difference it was a red herring
and now it is as bad as ever. There are no errors in the log files except to
tell me that the system was rebooted unexpectedly.
I am thinking that it is the Hard Drive but it is only 18 months old. Could
it be anything else? What should I try first and how? It is difficult to
test the HD as it freezes too quickly now. I have done a system test from
the F11 button and both the ram and HD passed. It only took a few minutes
though.

The Dell diags are fairly good at picking up HDD issues, try running this.
Does the system freeze outside the OS? Perhaps it is a software issue?

I have done lots of HD tests and they all come back OK. I have also run the health monitor for a few hours and usually it finds no problems. The only issue that I have seen is a memory error but 9 times out of 10 it has found the memory to be OK. I have also changed the memory and the same thing is happening. It used to have AVG installed, and has done for the last year, so I have uninstalled that to see.
I have spotted a few keyboard errors in the Bios but can't see what difference that would make and they might have occured after the freeze becuase of course the keyboard doesn't work when it freezes. I don't see any options to do anything when a keyboard error is detected (such as restart, do nothing etc)
Any other thoughts greatly appreciated
