pci-x Slots in the Poweredge 1600sc.

:smileyindifferent: I own a Poweredge 1600sc and recently purchased a graphics card for it.  My question is; are the "pci-x" slots in my poweredge considered to be "pci-express".  Because the card I purchased says "pci-e" on the box, not  "pci-x".  Is there a difference between "pci-x" and "pci-e".  Because the system bios on my machine call the slot "pci-x".  Hopefully this isn't one of those "freak" Dell things!:smileymad:

The short answer is, no, you can't use a PCI-express card in a PCI-X slot.  If you want better graphics for a 1600SC, your only option is a regular PCI card, which are hard to find and not very powerful.

PCI-X is an industry standard extension to regular PCI.  You can even put PCI-X cards in PCI slots.  PCI-X is mainly targeted at servers.

PCI-express or PCI-E is a newer standard targeted at both servers and desktops.  PCI-E uses a different slot than PCI.  The only systems (Dell or otherwise) which have these slots came out in 2004 or later.

Hope this helps,
Brian
