3rd Party Drives in PERC H710 Mini
We recently had a drive fail in our Dell PowerEdge R720 that has a PERC H710 Mini raid controller.
The firmware version of the PERC H710 Mini controller is 21.3.2-0005
We ordered 2 replacement drives using the same model# of the failed drive, one as a spare for future failures, as its a production server. They aren't dell certified but they are the same exact model as the certified one that failed.
We tried both drives, however one lists as failed and the other lists as unsupported, and we can't rebuild the array.
I read that the new RAID controllers from dell only allow certified dell drives, but I also read somewhere there was a firmware update to allow 3rd party drives.
I am trying to figure out if this is true, the latest firmware update I have installed allows 3rd party drives and I have something else going on. Or in fact with this model I will need to get a certified dell drive.

Hello
The H710 has never blocked non-Dell drives. The information you are referring to is the H700. When the H700 was released it blocked the use of non-Dell drives. The limitation was removed with one of the first firmware updates.
The H710 should list drives that are not running Dell firmware as unsupported, but it does not block their use. Some non-Dell drives do not even show as unsupported. If the drive is not functioning in the system it is not because it is being due to being non-Dell. It is likely a firmware communication issue. You can try updating the PERC and HDD to the latest firmware. You will have to update the HDD on a different system if the PERC will not put it into a ready state.
Thanks
