There is a 39320A-R (R for RAID), which does support RAID, which is probably where the confusion comes from.

The 4e/DC has two internal and two external connectors. You do not need a RAID key for an add-in PERC - only for the ROMB (RAID On MotherBoard) systems (4e/Si, 4e/Di).

So, why not use the onboard PERC?

No, it is a non-RAID SCSI adapter. There is no firmware update to enable RAID - the hardware simply is not capable. You could always do Windows-managed software RAID (or get a PERC 4e/DC).

Thank you, finally a "flash" of knowledge and precision !

Just search on the web, most list it as RAID capable.

I have an internal PERC 4e/Si (hope I remember correctly) in this box, so the PERC 4e/DC has external connectors ? Did I understand correctly ? Will the memory , raid key and battery(from the existing internal PERC controller) fit a PERC 4e/DC if I decide to get one, or do I get the whole kit ?

Also, the software RAID is an option, I have 2 XEON 3.4G and 16GB ram, software raid should be fast enough, I guess ?

Please confirm.

I do use it, I have a RAID mirror there (2x300GB Cheetah)running the OS (C: drive) but I cannot fit the other 4 HDD's inside the 1850 pizza box, at least I do not know how to do it, there does not seem to be room.

The 1850 only takes 2 internal HDD trays.

So I have to resort to external storage (another dummy box with 4 additional HDD's, basically) connected to a controller or something that has an external 68 pin LVD connector.

I think your suggestion with the 4e/DC is perfect, or the other with the 39320A-R.

So there is hope.
