Adding 2 x 600gb 10k SAS Drives to R610 Perc 700. Perc doesn't find them?

Hi all,  have a Poweredge R610.

Everything I beleiave is up to date. Lifecycle contorller, Bios etc.

Ah hang on I did read soemthing yesterday about another management system sofwtare one needs besides the Lifecycle one.

“Dell Repository Manager"

This just checks everything else is up to date?

I currenlty have as part of my raid set up 2 x SAS drives 300gb.

2 x SSD 146gb.

No problem configuring them in Raid as raid 0 to 5 etc

But if I add these SAS 600gb Drives, They are not found.   I have read Dell Manual and checked on line,  these should be okay.

I am thinking while typing this, do they have to go in a certain order as in each hot swap drive trays.

e.g SAS first then SSD etc? Did read in manual SSD can only be 0 and 1. I think.

What can I trouble shoot to sort this out.

Thanks

Phil

PHILBY12,

Could you confirm where you are looking for the drives to be displayed? Are you looking under the Physical Disk page of the controller, or under the Virtual Disk page? I ask as the drive won't show outside the Physical disk page, unless it is configured to to a Virtual Disk.

Yet if the drives are not showing in the Physical Disk page then they are likely incompatible with the server, or the controller. You can also look if the drives work in any available slot, to see if you might be trying another side of the backplane with a cable possibly.not installed, just something to check.

Let me know the controller model, as well as the hard drive part numbers, and I can check on it for you.

Hi Chris thanks for reply, Sorry for delayed reply.

I was looking under Virtual as in Lifecycle software where you chose option to deploy OS and then configure Raid.

Controller card is a Perc 700.

Not sure what you mean by physically page, but I believe I have some updating of the systems own software to do.  Have upgraded Bios, perc lifecycle software drivers, but cannot get the System at the PXE section during its boot to connect to Dell’s FTP servers to check for anymore updates, which would be easier I believe than putting an OS on and then doing the updates.

Changing the IP numbers for that section do not like what I put in.

My network IP DNS is on another Domain Server currently, with a gateway of 192.168.2.1, the IP of R610 is 192.168.2.3.

Networking what I should have for DNS is always the area I am weak at, I believe it should be the same as the IP of the System you’re on, as in 192.168.2.3, but with the older server being domain DCHP one, maybe I should be putting in its DNS of 192.168.2.2

I trust I am making sense, doing this with a sinus infection effected head.

The drives I have worked out, previous owner didn't have the tray front door part labels right.

I have 2 pairs of SAS drives 300GB and 600 GB in capacity.

Models.

IBM 600GB 10K 6Gb SAS FRU 85Y5864 / 00L4521 2.5"

HUC106060CCSS600

300GB Seagate St9300653SS

1 Pair Dell SSD 146GB Cap.

MBE2147RC

Trust this helps answer my queries.

Cheers

Phil

BTW I just loaded system without the two 600gb drives and now I understand what you meant by Physical drives.

Here is snapshot of lifecycle after I just set up raid 5

Hi Chris know you'd be busy but did you get a chance to check this for me?

Thanks

In order to connect to the FTP you would need to boot to the Lifecycle Controller (F10) and then from there select Platform Update. From there you can enter ftp.dell.com and have it check for updates. It will list current versions and available versions.

Let me know if you see what I am referring to.

Hi Chris, thanks fro reply and yes I understand what you mean.

Does one need to enter a user name and password to use FTP option and if so, what should one use?

I did some research and maybe it is admin and calvin? Well from Dell's own videos on you tube maybe, but what is point of a password if everyone know sit, anyway let me know when you can.

Okay worked out Lifecycle update section today, got FTP to work, My query is now back to what I asked awhile back, and looking at parts and accessories for this R610 on Dell's own site, 600gb drives are comaptable. Even 1TB are.

I had I believe but cannot find it dsue to a WIndows back up on my Win 10 system, a manual that showed me which oirder one install the drives.

I am assuming from what the Diagnsotic display on front tells me., that loking at it from the fornt and left, drive bays go 0,1,2,3,4,5

I recall you saying with Raid on can configure more than one raid , which I am trying to do, but it doesn't pick up the 600gb drives in bays 5 and 6.

Now is this because they are not Dell drives or?

As they are the following type.

IBM 600GB 10K 6Gb SAS FRU 85Y5864 / 00L4521 2.5" Drive in Tray HGST

It also will not find the orginal 146SAS drives that came with it,

Even the 2 146gb SAS drives that came with system 2nd hand  Perc controller / raid will not find them either. Using it raid 1,2 5 r 10 etc

During Boot I see degraded where one presses Ctrl and C to get to Controller card for Raid config But in there I do not see any drive degrared, just the 4 drives I have in bays 0 to 3.ERC Option  comes up, I believe that is raid related.

Chris is there a manual for this system that would help on this, as both manuals I have, do not help, One is the basic owners manual the other one more detailed about adding parts etc.

Good news Chris I found manual In was looking for, and sometime the obvious in front of you.

The trays these two hard drives were in, previous owner had screwed them where it says SASU or AU.

Hence Server would of course not pick them up being SAS drives, Once I put 600gb drives in tray correctly, server found them,

All 6 drives.

Although for the two orginaly Dell 300gb SAS what has me stumped is their LEDS do not light up at all, Cannot even get Perc Controller software for Raid to make them Blink.

As they should per this link.  Other 4 do.  Must be a loose wire somewhere.

What I may do if I feel really ken is swap these into another tray holder for them and check..

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN292269/chassis-status-indicators-and-hard-drive-carrier-leds-for-poweredge-servers?lang=EN#drive carrier

But I can live with that,

Thanks

Phil
