Changing #4351P PERC 2 Battery

I'm stunned that so many users in this forum ask the same question and no one responds, even a moderator.  I have a battery that won't recondition after multiple tries on a PE6300. After 4.5 years and much heat, I'm not surprised that it needs replacement.   It should take much less time to replace the battery than replace the SCSI controller.  Lower cost too.

What's the generic model number of battery and where can I get it?  How do I replace it?  I understand configuration is stored on disk and NVRAM which I think is powered by this battery. So when I boot up server, it should indicate a difference in settings.  I'll need to save the settings on disk to update NVRAM.

Can someone more experienced advise me?  :smileywink:

I had the same problem about six months ago.  There are two batteries fitted on a daughter board on the PERC 2 controller.  On the original version of the PERC 2 controller supplied with the machine the batteries were soldered onto this board.  At least one of these batteries was faulty and the ends of the battery badly corroded.  I attempted to purchase replacement batteries from Dell, but was told this was not possible.  I then attempted to purchase a replacement daughter board - and was again told that this was not available.  In the end, I had to purchase a complete new PERC 2 controller board complete with daughter board and batteries.

This cost nearly £600 - for the sake of one faulty battery!!

The new board was a later version, and has replaceable batteries on it - so hopefully this will not arise again.   The board was simple to fit, recognised the existing disks and containers, and worked successfully on the first reboot.

One other problem.  FAST would not work with the new board.  It reports an error stating that it requires a leter version of a DLL file.  I am still attempting to find out which version is required for this board - but so far have not had any success.

Hope you have better luck than me.

Quintincastle, thank you for reply.  Since there are different battery models, maybe it's best for me to remove daughter board and try to read a number off the battery.  I'm comfortable with a soldering iron.  By the way, can you tell me the model number of your batteries.  A local supplier here says he sells them for $48 but I don't know if that's a fair price.

The batteries that are soldered onto the old board have a part number of:
        Adaptec PN : 14698
        GP PN       NT8H2A4HZ

Not sure what the batteries are on the new board, as this is on a live server.

Whoa - you mean the older PERC2's have the battery soldered on?  I was hoping it was simply a lithium cell I could swap out myself.  :smileysad:

Pcreager,
Next Tuesday I plan to pull the Perc 2 bd from the server, remove the daughter bd, and inspect batteries.  I want to find out whether it's the solder or plug-in type to order a correct replacement.  Locating a generic part number would make ordering easier.  One supplier quoted me $48, but I don't know if this is fair.   For me, soldering is a snap.  After learning on my board, I'll offer to do yours. Changing the entire Perc 2 board could cause a nightmare of software issues.
