Compaq Smart Array 5300 non-Compaq firmware?

I have a Compaq SA5300 (which used the Adaptec AIC-7899g chipset like the Dell perc3 controller)
When I try to make the controller the boot controller I get an error "A BIOS Interface error has occurred" Making me think that the Compaq controller isn't being allowed to communicate with the Dell BIOS.

My System:

Precision 670
Onboard AIC-7902
BIOS A07

Does anybody know if this controller will work in a Dell system? Is there a generic BIOS that I can put on the controller? I am in a bind and need to get this working yesterday!

Compaq array controllers do not have the BIOS built into the controller.  The actual boot BIOS for the controller is contained in the system ROM.

This means that if you install a Smart array controller in a Compaq/HP server it will boot to the controller fine.  In any other machine (Dell included) you can use the controller as a SECONDARY controller, but you can NOT boot to it.
