Convert PowerEdge T110 (G11) to Linux PERC (S 6-9) tips?

Convert PowerEdge T110 (G11) to Linux PERC (S 6-9) tips?

My firm has just replaced a Dell PowerEdge T110 II [10] Generation 11 (2010) Server. I've picked it up for a few workgroup side projects. At 10 years this server is out of support, so its my attempt to keep this server out of a landfill and make some good use for it.

I want to install Linux. Original factory config has PERC S300 RAID, which only supports Windows. Community suggestions for Linux Support say to use PERC 6i or PERC H700 [2] hardware adapters. I can find these on eBay for as little as $10 or as much as $75.

Reviewing documentation for those RAID Controllers they all appear to support Linux [11]. The Series 9 card PERC H330 looks like it also supports SATA drives which I can pickup very cheaply. Only this card runs about $100-200 on eBay.

Regarding these PERC Adapters (6i, H200, H700, H330) I hope to confirm,
- All support Linux?
- All support Generation 11 PowerEdge Server (T110 ii)?
- Only H330 support SATA RAID?

Anyone care to weigh in on,
- ease of install/setup?
- problems which might keep help me choose a RAID solution?

Thanks.
I've also collected a bunch of links from my research here on Dell, so maybe this will help others too.

Hi,

Here the reference of T110 supporting PERC that can be installed: https://dell.to/34ufxjy

You may need to refer to the RAID controller's user guide to check on the compatibility of supported OS, for example, I'm referring to the table link above, T110 supports PERC H200. Based on H200 support documents here: https://dell.to/3rhCxwc it can support up to Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® version 4.7, version 4.8, and version 5.3.

You may need to replace the cables if you're planning to install H200, example cable would be P/N: 233TD .

Let me know if you have questions.

Bummer I can't edit my OP, because the Legacy Support Matrix tab on your linked page shows several of the PERC solutions as 'Not Supported':

  • PERC 6/I
  • PERC H700
11G Servers PERC 6/I 256MB CERC C/i SAS 6/iR PERC H700 1GB NV PERC H700 512MB NV PERC H700 512MB PERC H200 PERC H200
(Tape)
PERC S300 (3Gb) PERC S100
T110 NS NS A NS NS NS A A A Intel-OMB

The suggestion of the H200 is the safe choice as it is contemporary with the machine's vintage. It certainly has a good aftermarket price point, but not ideal in terms of the SAS-drive requirement.

Can I expect any leeway with 'Not Supported'? Can I find a Linux supported PERC solution which also supports SATA?

Hi unfortunately it says here

https://dell.to/37PU8DJ  T110 has no PERC supports.

I hope this helps.
