DELL PowerEdge R710 RAID Configuration
Hi all,
I'm new to DELL server and this community, I need helps on RAID configuration for DELL R710 server. We have just purchased 2 DELL R710 server with:
02 x 146GB SAS HDD
04 x 300GB SAS HDD
I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit using the default configuration for RAID with setup DVD (came with servers). In the RAID configuration, I clicked the option of "Retain RAID configuration" or something like that (not remember exactly) because there was no way to click other options than that.
In Windows 2008 disc management, I can see only two discs only:
1st: 186GB (C drive)
2nd: 836GB (un-allocated)
The question is, did I got something wrong with the RAID configuration or something like that? I can't see all HDD came along with DELL R710 server and how do I configure RAID on this server?
If there is something wrong with first installation by myselft, are there any ways to configure RAID without re-installing of Windows 2008 server? My two servers are DHCP and DNS and Anti-virus server already, I don't think about re-installing of Windows because it will lead to disruption to our clients in our LAN.
Actually, I don't have much experience with RAID configuration on server. Do you guys have any installation manual or anything like that for me or you can show me how to do it.
Thanks a lot.

Since Windows is oblivious to the number/size/type of hard drives that are attached to the RAID controller - it is only aware of the arrays/logical disks presented to it by the controller. What Disk Management shows appears correct, except for a small descrepancy in the RAID 1, which I think might just be a typo (?):
Disk 0: Two 146GB drives in a RAID 1 ... 2x136=~136GB (are you sure it shows 186GB?)
Disk 1: Four 300GB drives in a RAID 5 ... 3x278=~836GB
(Keep in mind that usable disk space after GB conversion is roughly 6-7% less than the advertised size of the drive.)
You can see/monitor the individual drives from Windows only by installing software that can interface directly with the controller through the RAID driver ... OpenManage Server Administrator (Download and run to extract, then run C:\Openmanage\windows\setup.exe.):
ftp://ftp.dell.com/sysman/OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-WIN-6.3.0-2075_A00.20.exe
If there is something you want to fix, there is no way to fix it other than to delete the array and reinstall and/or restore.
