I'm not seeing that the R900 officially supported any SSDs. That being said, the PERC6 was used as an option in the 11th generation of servers that followed this one. I bring that up because some of those systems had SSD support. So, I expect you could likely get SSDs to work, but there's not any official support for it on the platform
Thnks for your input, i guess i will have to definetly order 2 units of SSD drives.. and make a small test first with 2 units..
The specs on the raid controller models does says its SAS 3gbps.. so i guess even if the SSD drives work, i will be limited to 3Gbps.. that said 300MB its a fair decent speed.. not sure what speeds i can get on the 300GB SAS 15K RPM .. But even do i will give it a shot..
BTW.. does anyone know a small caddy adpter compatible with the Dell 3.5 caddy in order to replace the SAS with 2.5SSD inside.
The R900 comes with 5 Caddys with 5 SAS 3,5... is there any other option, perhaps change the caddy to 2,5 and perhaps add 10 drives 2.5 instead of 5 HDDs 3.5?
I tried searching through the parts database, and I found PN# 9W8C4 to be useful but, the information is vague, as it's not listed as a part for R900, rather parts for 14G server. Probably you would like to try sort out it.
I don't think that's possible to change the system from 5X3.5" drives to 8X2.5" drives chassis, as there is no available chassis for purchase after server is shipped out. You probably may need to get a used 8X2.5" chassis online to convert it and change the backplane with cables.
