Dell poweredge r200 raid configuration

HI all,

We  currently using the Dell poweredge r200 server with window server 2003.

And want to configure a RAID1 2TB(SATA) X 2 on Dell poweredge r200.

But in the Dos mode(RAID configuration ) , it can't configure with 2TB x 2 (can't Synchronous )

Whether some patch need install or missing some step to finish the configuration?

Please kindly to help.

Thanks.

Skyfong1129,

The issue more than likely is due to the server having a SAS6/ir installed. The SAS6/ir doesn't support arrays larger than 2TB. If you have a Perc 6/i installed on the server it would be able to support the larger than 2TB arrays, as long as the latest firmware is installed.

What controller do you have installed?

Thank for your reply.

Actually, The dell server already run SATS 2TB X 1 , but can't install other SATA 2TB.

I think the server is without the  Perc 6/i installed.

In this situation , Can the server configure the raid 1 (2 TB X 2) without the Perc 6/i by only updates the  latest firmware?

Besides, How can I check the controller version?

I want to capture some useful information for you but I don't know how to do.

Please kindly help. Thanks.

You have two 2TB disks that you are trying to set up on a SAS 6/iR, right?

Boot to CTRL-C and get the firmware version of your controller.

What brand and model of hard drives are you using?

1. What MODEL is it (model number)?

2. I thought you had TWO drives.  You CANNOT create an array on a SAS 6/iR with a single disk - you would have to use it in non-RAID mode, in which case you do not need to initialized anything.

1. Product ID WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0

2. Yes, . I have two drives. Since I can't sync with two SATA hard-disk . I dismount other one ; thus only one hard disk currently running.

Ok ... do you have an OS installed on the single disk then?  Otherwise, how did you run DSET?  What OS?  If you do have an OS on one disk, then you are going to have to wipe it out when you create a RAID 1.  You cannot have a single non-RAID disk then "sync" it in a RAID 1 on the fly - RAID and non-RAID are NOT compatible.

Also, your WD Black hard drives are 1) not certified drives for use on Dell RAID controllers, which isn't usually the end of the world, but 2) they are also not even enterprise-class drives - unsuitable for  use an any hardware RAID environment, which may or may not alone be the cause of your problems.

I think I expressed clearly enough :

1. I currently using the Dell poweredge r200 server with window server 2003.

2. Since I can't sync with two SATA hard-disk . Also, when I try to sync two hard-disk with the below setting :

  Slot          Device IDentifier                                                                         Drive Status

0      WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0 (with window server 2003)         Primary

    1      WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0                                                          Second

But it fail to sync and the WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0 (with window server 2003)  can't boot again, I need to recovry from backup. So I dismount other one ; thus only one hard disk currently running.

3. "If you do have an OS on one disk, then you are going to have to wipe it out when you create a RAID 1."

That means when I create a RAID1 array, I need two empty hard-disk and install the OS after the array created successfully ?

I think the setting of  Primary & Second on RAID controller is using for sync the disk from primary to second non-loss.

Is that right?
