HDD in failed state after clearing Foreign config in R815 (PERC H700)
Hi Experts!
I have a working server (PowerEdge R815) running ESXI and I would like to add some hdds to increase the storage available.
Currently the server has the first 3 hdd slots filled with 2x 136Gb HDs (RAID1) and 1x 996gb HD (RAID0) working fine.
I have some spare HDDs from some decommissioned servers and I when I inserted them, both links are green.
OMSA 9.3.1 shows those HDDs as part of a Foreign RAID so I cleared the Foreign configuration from the PERC H700 but after I do that, disks change status from "Foreign" to "Failed" and I cant take any further action.
Those HDDs were installed in some other servers and were working fine. Likely they belonged to some other raids but I just would like to "fresh start" them and become single RAID0 HDDs to be used as storage without any redundancy.
Any idea?

Hey B4ck,
As the RAID information is stored on the HDD you might try to take out the working drives and insert just the new (old) ones. If they are again showing up as foreign you can try to clear the config again and see what happens.
Also, you might check in the controller menu if you are able to create a new RAID with the drives.
If this also fails you may test to raw formatting them using another computer.
Hope you get them running

I'm ok with losing the existing data in the HDD but I dont have the option to clear the Foreign configuration in the old server as that server is completely decomissioned. Any way to use that HD as a complete clean/new one in my current server?

@DELL-Stefan R @DELL-Young E
I'm completely stuck.
The drives I installed are recognized as foreign and everytime I clear the Foreign config the drives go into Failed state.
Is there any way to wipe the drives clean as if they would be "from factory"?

Hi, as for this, at this point I would say it’s best contracting phone support team for TTY log analysis. It could be a controller (H/W) issue. I hope this helps and have a great one.

Hi @HFBerman87,
If you're having the same issue, as in after clearing foreign and the status changed to fail state, there is only few possibilities.
Try updating the RAID controller firmware to the latest. Check if the hard drive is compatible with the server. If both steps have been verified, and if you're getting a fail state on the drive, it means the drive has failed.
Another suggestion I can think of is to install back the drive to it's original server and initialize it. Then try moving it to the intended server. Let me know how it goes.

Firmware is the latest. I put the original 12 disks back on and imported the foreign config. Then I initialized. Inititalization seems to fail from the logs below and disks can't be seen.
