Both methods should work. There are several terms for it, Online Capacity Expansion and RAID Level Migration are the two most common. OCE can be use on supported storage controllers to expand virtual disks to allocate any unused space on drives to the virtual disk or expand by adding more drives. RLM is much the same, but it refers specifically to either changing the RAID level of the virtual disk or expanding the virtual disk by adding more drives. More information is in the storage controller manual.
RLM and OCE will require a storage management application like OpenManage Storage Administrator. Additional features were added to later generations that allow OCE and RLM through the iDRAC and system setup.
