No, without a controller the backplane will not be attached to anything. The onboard SATA connectors are not designed to accommodate a PCIe SSD, so there will be nothing to connect the drive to. The PCIe extender is part of the PERC 8 controller. Only x2 SATA can communicate without a controller installed.
Concerned that DellStar would let this configuration be quoted if it's not useable. Is there a customer kit available so this blade can be re-configured so a boot drive can be created?
Upon first review it appeared the PCIe extender was part of the controller card. This is not the case. The PCIe extender is it's own separate card. As long as you have the PCIe extender, which should have been installed with the options selected, the PCIe SSD should function. Page 57 of the manual has a picture of the PCIe extender:
Hello - I can locate the backplane and the extender card (not easily). But in the M630 version, there is a ribbon cable connecting those 2 items. I can't locate that part number or find it for sale. Oddly, Dell's own site doesn't list it. Maybe it's too old? Thanks!
I'll be happy to assist you with the cable question. The cable comes attached to the backplane. We do not have a separate part number for the cable. If you get a backplane without the ribbon cable, send it back.
Now on the M630 I've read online indications that it can't be changed to PCIE if not purchased. Is there anything that would restrict one from installing the pcie backblane on the m630? Is there an additional card?
I'm sharing this information about backplane for M630 I hope this will help;
* This is not a factory installed option, but will work
General Configuration Notes
The following are the general configuration notes for backplane and controller options.
SAS HDD, SATA HDD, as well as SAS SSD, SATA SSD drives are supported but not on all backplanes.
SAS HDD, SATA HDD, SAS SSD, SATA SSD and NO hard drive configurations with RAID controller (H330) require SAS backplane.
SAS backplane supports:
Both SATA and SAS hard drives
Both SATA SSD and SAS SSD drives
Diskless configuration, which requires SATA backplane without PERC controller
Mixed HDD/SSD are not supported
Software RAID S130 supports SATA HDD and SATA SSD only.
Backplane in the system is driven by one controller.
Unmanaged (No-RAID, no partitioned) drives support the H330, H730, and H730P.
RAID 0 and RAID 1 can support H330, H730 and H730P.
The Dell PowerEdge FC630 follows the same factory configuration guidelines as the Dell PowerEdge M630. Unique factory configurations are contained at the chassis level not blade/node/sled

No, the customer has a M620 with the following: 350GB Dell PowerEdge Express Flash PCIeSSD, 2.5in, Hot-plug (342-4009). I can share the entire quote.

The M620 doesn't have any PCIe slot. Did you mean maybe an R620 or T620?

On further review I don’t see a connector on the backplane. Could the m620 backplane be different from the m630, which I know has a cable?

Hello ryanrockwood,
You are correct. They are different.
M620 - backplane connects directly to system board
M630 - backplane has ribbon cable attached
I hope this helps.

We have the PCI-E backplane 217FX in the m620. Does it also need a PCI-E extender to allow the U.2 SSD drive to work?
