Perc H710P Mini + SSDSC1BG800G4R compatibility in an R420

Question

Hi, I am hoping someone can tell me if there is a known issue with using Dell SSDSC1BG800G4R S3610 Series Solid State Drives in an R420 with a Perc H710P Mini RAID controller. System BIOS is version 2.4.2 which is I believe the latest for that machine. PERC HP710 Mini BIOS Configuration Utility Version 4.04-0003 - I couldn't find an update for that. I thought I'd put 8 x 1.8' Dell SSDs in 2.5' adaptors and use them in this R420 however the integrated Perc H710P Mini RAID controller doesn't like them. If I throw a Samsung 850 Pro in there it happily presents itself as a usable Physical Disk in the RAID BIOS (CTRL+R) but 6 of the Dell drives report as 'Failed' and one of them as 'Blocked'. Is there something I need to do to make these drives available?  I find it hard to believe they are all no good, I just picked bought them, I thought new but it looks like they are refurbished. I tried clearing the config on the controller as well as any foreign settings on the drives.  Did I buy poorly? I confess I didn't do the research I should have first. These drives are 1.8' and I fit them into 2.5' caddies using 3rd party adaptors.  Is it likely they are causing the issue? Any suggestions on if this is possible? Paul

Yes, I would suspect that using unsupported drive adapters to install unsupported drives into the server is likely the issue. I suspect the issue is with the adapters. The drive would likely work if attached to a supported backplane, but I can't say for sure since there are no 1.8" backplanes or adapters supported on the R420.
