PowerEdge R350 needs to run our Powervault MD1200
We are replacing an old server (10yrs) with a new R350. We have an active MD1200 on another older server. We want to decommission the other server and just use the R350 with the MD1200.
How do we do this, what card is needed for the R350 to connect with the MD1200

Thank you, It's worth a test, OpenManage would need to work also, so probably a weekend of testing. We will be running server 2022 , hopefully there are appropriate drivers available.

So you would basically need an external SAS raid controller similar to what is running it on your current server. There is a chance you may be able to just move the external SAS controller over if the PCIe slot sizes match.
The card won't be "officially supported" as it won't have been validated from Dell but most PCIe cards should work across generations. Dell just won't officially call anything supported unless they have validated the card specifically in the system.
If the original card doesn't fit you would likely be looking for a H810 or H830 as an external raid controller.

Ok... i talk with my Dell TSR (i am a Dell Partner) and indeed the H840 goes into the 15Gen. (you have to check if its supportet in your R350 because of power and heat management).
The 16Gen. will get the H965e which comes later this year. Here we will see the new MD24xx which are 24bit SAS.

We tried something similar and failed. Replacing a old Dell with Perc 6e or so with MD1200 attached to a newer 14 or 15Gen Server. Old HBA wont work because server stops booting with a UEFI Error (maybe it should work with BIOS mode instead UEFI). We than use the supportet H840 for the server but i have in mind that connecting the MD1200 isnt supportet on paper but works for us.
I dont see a Series 12,11 PERC which can be used as a RAID HBA and have external Ports.
The last one was the PERC H840(Series 10) and is available as a CustomerKit and comes with a Low/Full slot cover.
You should ask you Dell Rep if the H840 is supportet on your R350. When it comes to the MD1200 youre on your own than. Keep in mind that you need 2x 12G SAS HD-MIN to 6G SAS cables!
If you havent order the R350 yet think about of getting R550 with 12x3.5" internal slots or R760xs with 12x3.5" to replace your MD1200. Both can be equiped with single CPU to reduce the price. The 16Gen replacement for the R350/550 isnt ready to quote right now.
