PowerEdge T40 Server "Reparing disk errors"

This is a PowerEdge T40 server from 2020 that I support at a dentist's office, running Windows Server Essentials 2019. After some Windows Updates yesterday, it started to not responding to anything -- I logged in as the Administrator, it would spin the wheel at "wait for the Local Session Manager", or it would be unresponsive "because Remote Desktop Services is currently busy."

I tried to boot into Safe mode to try repairing the OS. Then the Boot Manager showed me this screen with a "Dell EMC" logo and the message "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete."

It actually took about 10~15 minutes to get done. But that promoted a question:

Does the "disk errors" mean the HDD has hard errors or does it mean some kind of file system / OS corruptions?

Much appreciation for any insights.

Hello w9rivers,

From your statement it looks like you were able to successfully boot to the OS after the repair. Please let me know if that is incorrect.

I'd first suggest to make sure you have a good back up.

Then run Chkdsk to fix any issues it finds.

Also run the Embedded System Diagnostics from the Dell Lifecycle Controller to see if you have hard drive problems-

--note or take picture of any errors and continue testing--

There is a good write up here on Microsoft forum by Greg Carmack (not affiliated with Dell):
